WIMBLEDON VILLAGE CRIME ALERT:
Recently, we have suffered a spate of thefts from cars overnight and work vans during the day. The majority of these thefts have taken place due to the vehicle being left unlocked. Please lock you vehicle, even if it is left on the drive or behind closed gates and never leave your valuables on show, especially ‘Sat Nav’s’. Please also remove the sucker mark left on the windscreen from the Sat Nav. Also can you alert any tradesmen doing work at you house and ask them to lock their van. Thank you. Wimbledon Village

TrinitySafer Neighbourhoods Team 020 8721 2453 Trinity.snt@met.police.uk Newsletter
Welcome to the first Ward newsletter to be sent out via CommunitySafe, the best way to get police updates about what is happening in your local area. Please can I encourage you to get your friends/neighbours to join at www.communitysafe.gov.uk and join the Trinity Safer Neighbourhood Team. WARD PRIORITIES The current priorities for Trinity wards are: 1. Anti-social behaviour by youths in Wimbledon Town Centre The team regularly patrol outside Centre Court and commercial shop units in the centre of Wimbledon. There is a dispersal area authorised for the next five months. This enables us to tell youths to leave the area if they are behaving in an anti-social manner. If they return in breach of this they are liable to arrest. Recently a youth was asked to leave as he had been spitting in front of a shop door, swearing and shouting. Following his return five minutes later he was arrested and charged. He appeared at Wimbledon Youth Court and now has a three month curfew to prevent him adversely affecting the quality of life for others. 2. Anti-social behaviour related to alcohol in Wimbledon Town Centre There is an extensive controlled drinking zone in the Town Centre. It enables us to stop people drinking alcohol in the street. Within the zone we can seize any alcohol from any relevant individual. Elsewhere we regularly confiscate cigarettes and alcohol from those under eighteen. 3. Anti-social behaviour related to drugs – Autumn Close/North Road Regular patrols in this area have led to several arrests for possession of drugs following use of police stop and search powers. Three addresses have been searched with drugs found and seized at two of these. One individual has been charged with the supply of drugs and awaits trial at Crown Court. There has been a noticeable drop in numbers of youths congregating recently. A recent arrest of a male suspected of criminal damage led to a drug seizure from his motor vehicle. The male has been bailed and will be charged upon his return. The priorities are set by a ward panel that meets four times a year. The next meeting is planned for the 14th January 2009. At that meeting the priorities are reviewed and amended as the panel feel necessary. General There has been a recent increase in vehicle crime on Trinity Ward. A few cars have had property stolen from within – please think about removing or concealing any property left in vehicles overnight. A few cars have had the number plates stolen – we have a limited amount of special screws to prevent this. Finally, a few cars have had a wing mirror or windscreen wiper damaged. Though apparently relatively minor the damage causes a great deal of inconvenience. The majority of these vehicle crimes are occurring overnight. If you do see or hear anyone responsible please call 999 at the time. Below is a new non-emergency number launched in October 2008 to take some pressure off the 999 system. NEW NON-EMERGENCY POLICE TELEPHONE NUMBER 0300 123 1212 For any ongoing community / crime problems still call your dedicated Safer Neighbourhood Team. 0208 721 2453 Your dedicated Safer Neighbourhoods team is here to make a difference in your community. Ward Panel
One of our current ward priorities is tackling burglary. Whilst year on year instances have decreased we are still commited to reducing this further. We look at crime trends and times offences are occuring and conduct intelligence led high visibility and plain clothes patrols in areas affected. This proves invaluable and has resulted in several arrests where property has been recovered and offenders prosecuted. You can assist us by ensuring sheds are locked and that any valuable items, tools or bikes are secure or out of sight. December 1st-5th will see Action In Merton (AIM) week coming to Green Lane. This is a multi agency approach and we will seek to tackle many of your concerns in a relatively small area. We will be using Traffic division to assist in targetting uninsured vehicles that are travelling through your ward area. A concern among residents is speeding vehicles along Green Lane, we will be conducting several speed gun operations in Green Lane in an attempt to combat this as well as conducting additional pro active patrols. There will be fly tipping enforcement, graffiti removal and litter patrols making the community safer and cleaner. There will be additional information regarding the services that will be offered coming to you shortly. Your St Helier Safer Neighbourhoods Team will act upon information we receive from members of the public concerning criminal or anti social behaviour. We have very close links and work in partnership with our Safer Merton colleagues. If you have information or if you would just like to have a chat about something that is affecting you in the area then you can contact us in complete confidence or call crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. In an emergency always dial 999 At present we have three ward priorities set by our ward panel which are :- 1. Residential Burglary
The panel meets around four times a year, and determines what the team priorities will be. The next meeting is scheduled for 6.00 p.m. 22nd January 2009 at Raynes Park Library. If you would like to become a member of the panel, or would like any issues raised at the meeting please let us know. We have used a number of tactics to tackle our priorities, these include an Automatic Number Plate Reader operation in West Barnes Lane, and a Search Arch operation in Raynes Park Railway Station to disrupt and detect offenders. We also had a Crime Prevention Officer on the ward during our Action in Merton Week. Burglary traditionally increases around the Christmas period. We intend provide crime prevention advice to as many households on the ward as possible.

Welcome to the first update from your local Safer Neighbourhood Team. We will be producing these around every couple of weeks to keep you informed of what is happening on the ward. The text message service will cost 12p per message but it is unlikely that we will be sending anything out other than emails. It is easy to adjust which notifications you receive on the home page though so don’t panic if you have put your phone number in. Currently the Cricket Green Safer Neighbourhood Team consists of the following Sergeant Dan Hutchings who replaces Trevor Richards as of 11th November 2008 Constable Gerard Williams
The priorities for the ward as decided at the last Ward Panel Meeting are ensuring that Police engage and communicate with local youths and the issue of Criminal Damage by fire to the bins on the Phipps Bridge Estate, which we are currently targeting successfully. A visit from the Fire Brigade and Police to the local Youth Centre was recently arranged for a talk on the dangers and consequences of setting fires and since this time there has been only one reported minor incident. The Fire Brigade are currently looking at closing down their action plan on the matter as they no longer consider it a problem. Our officers and PCSO’s regularly attend Youth Centre events in order to build a relationship with the youngsters there. Over the Halloween/Bonfire Night two week period the team have been working later shifts. During this time they worked alongside the six other Mitcham Safer Neighbourhood Teams to provide a high visibility response throughout Mitcham to incidents of anti social behaviour which tend to peak at this time of year. The Mitcham teams responded to a number of calls and conducted numerous stop searches and accounts. Despite things being much quieter this year than previously, ten people were arrested during the operation for a number of offences that included drink-driving, possession of drugs with intent to supply and robbery. If you experienced any problems that we are not aware of yet please contact us and let us know so that we can plan for future events. BE ALERT - It would appear that there are people observing users of the cash machines in and around Mitcham Town Centre whilst they input their pin codes and then distracting them and taking the cards, which are then used immediately elsewhere to withdraw cash. Please be vigilant whilst using the cash machines and be aware of anyone standing nearby or watching you or anything that looks out of place on the machine. If in doubt do not input your pin number and use another machine. Call Police on 999 if you believe that there is suspicious activity around any cash machines. The next Ward Panel meeting is on the 25th of November 2008 at 1830hrs when we will decide the next priorities for the ward. Please contact us on the details below should you have any suggestions as to what the ward priorities should be or if you would like to be involved with the panel in the future. Should you need to contact us for any reason we can be emailed at CricketGreen.SNT@met.police.uk or reached by telephone on the Cricket Green mobile on 020 8649 3576 where a message can be left for us. This number is not for reporting crime but you can call 0300 123 1212 to report for non emergencies and as ever if there is an emergency or a crime happening ‘now’ then call 999 to ensure a prompt Police Response. Sergeant Dan Hutchings |

An Action In Merton Week is being launched on Monday 10th November at 10am and will run until 15th November on the Carters Estate, West Barnes Lane, Raynes Park. Action In Merton Week is about pulling all agencies resources together in providing awareness on the many of services that are available for the community, this includes Met Police Support, London Fire Brigade, NHS services and other agencies linked into Merton. The week is about raising awareness of some of the work being done by local agencies in Merton to tackle crime and anti social behaviour to make the community safer and cleaner. It will take the form of a week of action bringing together public services and members of the community to address the concerns that are raised to us. There is a weekly drop in surgery and this will take place as normal on Thurs 13th November 2008 between 1030-1130 for Raynes Park residents. It is held in the portakabin outside Farnham Gardens on the estate. We would like to see you at the launch on the 10th and the surgery on the 13th.
