BOGUS CALLER & VEHICLE CRIME

September 01, 2010 09:36

BOGUS CALLER & VEHICLE CRIME

Dear residents,

On Tuesday 24th August 2010 between 1600 - 1700 hrs, a male posing as a British Gas employee attended an address on Chester Row, stating that he was there to take a meter reading. Although nothing from the premises was taken, the occupier believed the male to be suspicious, and later called British Gas who confirmed they did not have any engineers in the area on that day.

The male was described as a white male approximately 45-50 years of age, brown hair with specs of grey, wearing a light grey jumper with the British Gas logo on the front, he was also carrying what appeared to be a meter reader, and had a form of photo identification.

On the same day, the same resident had items stolen from his car which was parked on Chester Row, the vehicle had no damage and it was unclear how the suspect gained entry to the vehicle. We cannot confirm if these incidents were linked.

Theft from motor vehicle has risen in this area, please be aware and never leave items on display in your vehicle, if possible never leave valuable items in the boot of your car.

On Wednesday of this week I patrolled the whole of Chester row and listed 5 vehicles that had valuables on display.

Please do not become a victim ! ! !

Many thanks

High valued bikes targeted.

August 31, 2010 18:41

Dear Members,

This email is to raise awareness in regards to thefts of pedal cycles which have been occurring in the Raynes Park Ward.

There have been 4 incidents in the past 2 weeks, where high valued pedal cycles have been removed from secure locations.

In each case, the cycles have been stolen either overnight, or whilst residents have been on holiday. Thefts have been from locked sheds in rear gardens; side gates have been similarly locked.

Owners have left their cycles in a secure location and padlocks on shed doors have been tampered with i.e. picked or removed and the suspects have then continued to lift the cycles and frames over fences and locked gates as high as 6 foot, which indicates to us that two or more suspects are working together, possibly having noticed owners cycling their expensive bikes in the area.

The offences have occurred in Melbury Gardens, Cambridge Road and Spencer Road - Roads which are close in proximity of each other.

At these locations high valued and specialised cycles have been taken, accumulating to a value of £17,600

The following bullet points are tips on how to secure your pedal cycles as best you can:

• If owners keep their cycles in a garden shed overnight (which one of the above victims has done) we cannot stress the importance surrounding security enough. Owners should securely padlock cycles and if the bikes are left in sheds overnight - not only fit the cycles with a cycle lock but also use an appropriate padlock or door lock on the shed. Invest in quality locks and use them. Look for the 'secured by design' quality mark. As a general guide look to spend about a tenth of the value of your cycle on locks to secure it. (ie: secure a £1000 cycle with £100 worth of locks).

• Owners can fit an opaque glass pane in shed windows to reduce visibility into the sheds, so that suspects cannot identify high value cycles or property kept in the shed.

• Secure your cycle to an immovable object. Consider installing a floor or wall mounted anchor lock for extra security at home. Remember that thieves can remove drainpipes and lift cycles off signposts.

• Immobilise - Immobilise.com allows you to create a free private and secure portfolio of all your personal property. If it is then lost or stolen you can use Immobilise.com to tell law enforcement agencies, your insurer, and the second-hand trade to assist in recovering your property and catch criminals. Record and register your bike:
- register your bicycle model, make and frame number free on the immobilise.com property register - take a clear colour photograph of your cycle and make a written record of its description, including any unique features Contact your local Safer Neighbourhoods Team to get your bikes security marked for free.

• Secure removable parts. Lock both wheels and the frame together. Take smaller parts and accessories with you, for example, lights, pumps and quick-release saddles.

• Prevent intruders getting into the back and sides of your home by installing strong fencing or gates. Check for weak spots where a thief could get into your garden, eg a low or sagging fence, or a back gate with a weak or no lock. Consider fixing trellis to the fence to make entry and exit points much more difficult for thieves.

If your cycle is not of high value do not think that your bike is not at risk. The team are often out letting home owners know that their cycles are left unsecured in plain sight of prying eyes. Please secure all your cycles and do not hesitate to contact the team to get your cycle security marked for free. The team is also available on appointment to come down to carry out a security assessment on your current storage location of your cycles and if needs be advise you further.

Dear Residents,

There a couple of events taking place in Chiswick in September that we feel might be useful for you to know about.

Firstly the front office at Chiswick Police Station will be closed from Monday 6th September 2010 for approximately one week to allow building works work to take place. This refurbishment will not impact on police operations from the building and officers will be patrolling the local community as normal.

Members of the public who need to attend the front office at Chiswick during this time can contact the police in one of several ways -

By visiting front offices at neighbouring police stations - Brentford, Acton, Hammersmith and Hounslow will all be open as shown on www.met.police.uk
By calling the police control room on 0300 123 1212
By contacting your local Safer Neighbourhoods Team, details of which can be found on www.met.police.uk/saferneighbourhoods

Non urgent reports of crime can also be made at www.met.police.uk In an emergency always dial 999.

Secondly on Saturday September 11th, organisations from across West London will be on Chiswick Common for the 2nd Chiswick Community Safety Day. Between 10am and 4pm, there will be stands and events taking place that will showcase the work of community safety agencies working in Chiswick. Ranging from the blue light services to local charities, the event will be an opportunity for local residents to see how much work goes into helping the local area. As well as this, there will be stands from organisations helping young people, displays and competitions for visitors to watch and take part in.

The event will include stands from the fire brigade, air ambulance, police, the local council and many more besides. Admission is free and there will be a live radio broadcast from the event.

Local charities will also be supported - The Dukes Meadow Trust, Meadow House Hospice, Age UK and the Tommy Hollis Fund will all be in attendance on the day.

Although this event has been organised by Chiswick Police (Hounslow Borough) officers from Southfield SNT will also there on the day so please come along and have a chat.

Team News
There have been some changes on the team. PC Chris Worthy and PCSO Michelle Cooper have moved on to pastures new and I would like thank them for all they have done for the ward over the last 2 years. I now welcome PC Lee Abberton and PCSO James Lewis to the team. Both are experienced officers who can contribute a lot to the team.
Foxes
Over the last couple of months we have received several concerning reports of car brake cables being cut. This is a very serious offence as the intent of the offender is to endanger the lives of the passengers. However enquiries established none of the victims were in dispute with other people and a suggestion was made that foxes were responsible. We did some research into the matter and contacted Professor Stephen Harris from Bristol University. He is an expert in mammal behaviour and has previously worked with the Police. We sent him some of the damaged cables and he examined them and found tooth marks on all of the cables we sent him. He advised it was impossible to tell if the tooth marks left on the cables were those of a fox, small dog or even a cat but he had not ever heard of cats showing this behaviour and while dogs chew cables free roaming dogs are uncommon in Britain. So he concluded it will almost certainly be the work of foxes. If you would like information on how to prevent this damage please contact us and we’d be happy to visit and advise.
Other ward news
Some people may have seen a Police cordon on one end of Westway in the morning of Saturday 14th August. This was put in place following a man being found unconscious in the street and we feared he had been attacked. However when he came to later that morning he explained he thinks he had fallen over and knocked himself out as none of his property was missing and he does not remember being attacked at all.
Near the start of the school holiday West Barnes and Raynes Park Safer Neighbourhood Teams joined up to conduct the operation checking licensed premises are not serving to underage teenagers. We were somewhat disappointed to have 4 of the 11 premises tested serve to the underage person. This earned the shop assistant an on the spot £80 fine and the premises had a review on their suitability to hold an alcohol licence.
The increased patrols around Shannons Corner and Sir Joseph Hood Memorial Playing Fields car park have identified people using cannabis in these locations. Two people have received formal warnings following being found in possession of small quantities of the drug. If found in possession of drugs a second time then the next stage for the two people will be prosecution. Five other people were stopped and searched following their suspicious behaviour in relation to this matter. If you would like advice on drug issues then one available helpline is www.talktofrank.com or 0800 776600.
The West Barnes Team continues to work hard in your area. For any further information please contact your local Safer Neighbourhoods Team as detailed below.

WARD PRIORITIES

Anti social behaviour - Figges Marsh

We have concentrated efforts on the Marsh. We have continued to work with Safer Merton who have installed extra rubbish bins and dog waste bins. The message is Don’t Litter and Pick up after your dog. We are increasing patrols on the Marsh in the evenings to tackle the drinkers who have been subject of numerous complaints.

Anti Social behaviour - Mitcham Town Centre

We are continuing to use the dispersal zone in the town centre and keeping up patrols.
We have held street briefings by the Clock Tower.
Beginnings of ASBO proceedings were implemented on a group who were causing problems. They appear to have taken heed of their warnings and are not causing problems.
A male was arrested for causing harassment alarm and distress to members of the public in the Town Centre.
We will continue to pay attention to this area.

Burglary

Operation Lockdown started in July, a three month burglary initiative which will employ a range of tactics to disrupt burglary, gain intelligence and arrest and convict offenders in identified hotspots across the Borough.
Whilst the number of burglary offences across the Borough remain relatively low, there has been a recent rise in the number of opportunist burglaries where entry has been gained through open windows and unlocked doors. Residents are reminded to lock doors and windows when they go out, to keep ground floor doors and windows closed and secure when they go to bed and not to leave expensive and valuable items in view of passers by. We will receive extra resources throughout the three month period. Do not hesitate to contact us should you require any advice on crime prevention or security marking your possessions.
We have also seen a number of distraction burglaries where people will trick their way into your property. Always ask for ID before letting anyone in who you don’t know. If in doubt call the company concerned to check they have someone operating in the area.

Immobilise.com

During the course of our duties police regular recover property that we are unable to identify the owner. Even though we strongly suspect this property is stolen, without being able to identify the owner police are unable to prosecute the offenders or return the property to the rightful owners.
Immobilize is the world's largest FREE register of possession ownership details forms a very effective tool in helping to reduce crime and repatriate recovered personal property to its rightful owners.
Immobilize can be used by members of the public and businesses to register their valued possessions or company assets, and exclusive to Immobilize all account holders registered items and ownership details are viewable on the Police national property database.
This online checking service is used by all UK Police forces to trace owners of lost and stolen property. In addition Immobilize is checked daily by a huge range of recovery agencies and lost property offices including the Transport for London Lost Property Office.
I have attached the Immobilize web-site so that you can have a look for yourself, hopefully register, and record details of your property. Then if your property is lost or stolen, and comes into our possession, we can return it to you.

A Message from Detective Inspector Grahame Horwood Merton Police

Motor vehicle crime

We still have a number of items available to assist you to protect your vehicles. These are available at our surgeries or you can contact us on the details above.

We have:
Air fresheners to remind you to remove valuables and advise would be thieves that you have.
Cloths to remove marks on your windscreen left by a Sat Nav
Don’t bother cards advertising you have removed all valuables
Tamper proof number plate screws
Tamper proof Tax disc holder

As always, your Safer Neighbourhoods Team patrol on foot, pedal cycle and motorcycle. Please feel free to stop and speak to them concerning any issues.

Cricket Green Update

August 29, 2010 15:17

Cricket Green Ward update 29/08/2010

PRIORITY - Burglary

Operation Lockdown continues on five wards on the borough. Cricket Green, Lavender Fields, Abbey, Colliers Wood and Figges Marsh were identified as those that would benefit most from additional resources for the duration of this three month period. The burglary initiative will employ a range of tactics to disrupt burglary, gain intelligence and arrest and convict offenders across the Borough. Whilst the number of burglary offences across the Borough remain relatively low, there has been a recent rise in the number of opportunist burglaries where entry has been gained through open windows and unlocked doors.

The number of offences on Cricket Green ward has decreased as a result of recent arrests of burglars. This work will continue into October.

PRIORITY - Theft from motor vehicle

We are continuing with our drop in surgery at the Canons Leisure Centre on Madeira Road. The next one is on the 8th of September at 1900hrs. Feel free to drop in for advice or to speak to us about any other issues.

PRIORITY - Anti-social behaviour Phipps Bridge Estate

The team recently conducted a search warrant of an address in Albury Court and seized a pitbull type dog which was being kept illegally. The status dogs unit are dealing with the matter and the dog is currently in kennels. We will continue to identify and deal with any dogs that are being kept illegally.

We are increasing patrols in stairwells and passageways across the ward as a result of increasing concerns about youths congregating and have obtained access keys to provide us with easier access to these areas.

The safer transport team have been conducting screening arch operations around the tram stops and this type of activity will be continuing to deter criminals from carrying weapons.

Searches for weapons are being conducted across the estate to try and identify any concealed items. These will continue in the future.

MITCHAM FAIR

The team organised and were involved in the policing of Mitcham Status Fair again this year. There was no reported crime at the fair and no disorder. The screening arches were used to deter people from attending with weapons and this seemed to work again. We aimed to provide a safe and family friendly location for this event and succeeded.

IMMOBILISE

During the course of our duties police regular recover property that we are unable to identify the owner. Even though we strongly suspect this property is stolen, without being able to identify the owner police are unable to prosecute the offenders or return the property to the rightful owners.

Crime prevention advice regarding burglaries

Lighting - Exterior
A useful addition to security can be exterior lighting, either switched manually or automatically operated. But lighting does have its limitations and should be seen as an aid and not solely relied upon.
The most common form of lighting is passive infra-red which is activated when someone comes into its field of vision. Always be aware to place the lighting system out of reach of potential intruders therefore preventing any possible damaging being caused to the system. Lights can be useful on the approach to a front or rear door or garage, not only lighting up if someone approaches your house, but also when you approach, so that you can see if anyone is in the shadows. It must be remembered though that lights can be activated by certain animals. Also, you do not want the light to be activated every time your neighbour goes into their garden or when someone walks past the front of your property. However, the field of activation can be adjusted. An alternative is to fit low pressure sodium lights which are operated by a photo-electric cell. This turns the lights on at dusk and off at dawn. It is a much less obtrusive light and, although it is on all night, it can be cheaper to run than spotlights.
Register your property.
Immobilise website is an excellent way of locating the rightful owners of lost or stolen property. This is a free site where anyone can register their property by logging all their property with a serial number onto the web site. www.immobilise.com

Good New Story

August 26, 2010 15:14

Good News Story:

Youth Ward Panel, partner with Police to tackle bullying, robbery and an underlying fear of crime.

Concerns of students who attend a local youth ward panel in Streatham's Bishop Thomas Grant School have led to a large problem solving operation being put into place by local police. Streatham Wells Safer Neighborhoods Team have worked in partnership with BTG school, Arriva bus company, and the local councilor and ward panel during the project. All are united in finding solutions for the problems surrounding these young people.

Students had been feeling at risk of robbery and vulnerable to bullies whilst traveling home from school on their bus routes. Research by Police analysts revealed that numerous robberies had happened over the past 6 months. Ongoing efforts to deal with this has already provided a sense of progress and reassurance to both students, and others agencies involved in this initiative, and these efforts continue! The commitment of the police will involve regular scheduled deployments to cover the affected bus routes during the problem times, and increasing partnership with other agencies involved. Consequently a clear message will be sent to those who were contemplating intimidation and crime. Police have initiated a problem solving process, which reveals in greater detail the multiple ideas and approaches the police and partners are using to deal with this issue.

Sergeant Steve Jones commented “Its really important that the youth of the area realise that by their involvement in the youth ward panel, changes have been made to policing in Lambeth, we are now able to target the issues that they face specifically and proactively. Their positive contributions and ideas resulted in this taking place!”.

Dear residents,

CRIME FIGURES
We've had 6 residential burglaries, with 1 attempt (3 commercial burglaries) since the 25th July. Other figures for this period are:

Robberies: 2
Assault: 12
Domestic incidents where no offences alleged or suspected: 7
Public Order Offences: 4
Racially aggravated Public Order Offences: 1
Theft of motorvehicles: 6
Theft from motorvehicle: 3
Theft of pedal cycle: 2
Shoplifting: 8
Other theft: 1
Possession of Cannabis: 2
Cannabis Factory: 0
Possession of Coccaine: 0

Criminal Damage: 7
Sexual Offence: 1

Burglaries seem to have gone up slightly, but robberies reduced. Theft of motorvehicles has climbed (mainly motorcycles / scooters) so please make sure your vehicles are secure. Theft from motorvehicles has reduced.

Flytipping is still on the up. Our hotspot area at the moment is the alleyway between the Tooting end of Acre and Boundary Road. One resident in Acre Road has been issued an on-the-spot Police fine of £50 for dumping wood in the alley, whilst the details of another Acre Road resident has been passed to Merton Borough Council for enforcement as their details were found in bags of rubbish.

Operation Lockdown, a three month burglary initiative which started last month has been successful in reducing overall residential burglaries.

Meet the Street is a new initiative whereby over the next few years, your Safer Neighbourhoods Team will knock on every door on the ward and introduce themselves. This will give you the opportunity to air any issues you have. You will also be given a leaflet with the Teams contact details, as well as a list of other useful contacts. Colliers Wood are intending to start this next week.

A Message from Detective Inspector Grahame Horwood Merton Police
******************************************************
During the course of our duties Police regularly recover property that we are unable to identify the owner for. Even though we strongly suspect this property is stolen, without being able to identify the owner police are unable to prosecute the offenders or return the property to the rightful owners.
Immobilize is the world's largest FREE register of possession ownership details and forms a very effective tool in helping to reduce crime and repatriate recovered personal property to its rightful owners.

As always, your Safer Neighbourhoods Team patrol on foot, pedal cycle and motorcycle. Please feel free to stop and speak to them concerning any issues.
