UPDATES

Cannon Hill Common

The common is extremely busy at this time of the year with people utilizing the facilities for a number of different activities. As a result Cannon Hill Team have increased our patrols to ensure that people are acting in a considerate manner, allowing everyone to enjoy their experience. In line with this we have recently dispersed a group of youths who were acting in a disorderly manner, and prevented another group from using a disposable BBQ.

Hillcross Avenue

In response to complaints of speeding, Merton Council have introduced a 20mph speed limit in order to protect pedestrians from Hillcross Primary School. Following consultation with councilors and local residents Cannon Hill SNT have started to enforce the limit by periodic speed checks using a hand held speed detection device. In doing so, it is our intention to make the road safer for everyone.

Vulnerable Vehicle Scheme

In a bid to reduce motor vehicle crime, Cannon Hill SNT are asking residents to ensure that they do not leave valuables on display and that all windows and doors are secured on unattended vehicles. Under a new Vulnerable Vehicle Scheme, we will be contacting the people to provide crime prevention advice where valuables are on show in their vehicle. This will be done in person at the time, or if this has not been possible an advice letter will be sent to their home address.

Ravensbury Ward 28th June 2009

June 28, 2009 00:01

Since the last update we have continued to actively patrol the Ward. On the 15th June, as a result of a stop and search in Ravensbury Park, a male was arrested on suspicion of possession of class A drugs. He later admitted that this was in fact ‘speed’ which is an amphetamine. This was verified by analysis at Wimbledon Police Station and the male cautioned for the offence.

Whilst patrolling on the 23rd June a male was seen to throw a beer can over the fencing area in Ravensubry Park towards the river edge. The male was spoken to and directed to dispose of this in a nearby bin which he promptly did. He was warned about his future conduct and made aware that police patrol the park on a regular basis.

On the 24th June two children were found in the park and found to be truanting from school and were promptly returned to school by the Team. Shortly afterwards a suspicious male was seen walking along Morden Road and onto Boxley Road. On seeing police he discard a cannabis grinder and was stopped and search and found to be in possession of cannabis. He immediately received a penalty notice for £80 and the cannabis seized.

Summer advice

June 27, 2009 16:29

Summer reminder.

Summer is finally here, (for this week at least !)

Please remember that if you are leaving your home for any length of time, Police advice remains to lock all doors and windows as you leave.

For those who are going away for any length of time, please, again, remember the simple things, which are often easy to overlook.

Cancel milk and newspapers if they are usually delivered. If it is possible, arrange for friends to come in to your home and give the impression of ‘business-as -usual’ ie curtains or blinds drawn at night.

There has been a garage break-in in Tybenham Road within the last two-weeks. Having broken the lock on a side gate, the offender then forced the lock on the garage door prior to removing items from the garage.

Garages in Erridge Road have also had entry attempted, although the offender was only able to break the door handles to the garages, and no entry was achieved.

Your vigilance is encouraged, and ANY suspicious sightings are welcomed, either as they happen via 999, or if for any reason you are unable at the time, subsequently to Merton Park SNT via 0208 721 2451.

It is still a fact that unless we know what is going on, we are unable to prevent it from continuing !!

…………………………………………………………………………………………..................................…

Merton Park SNT have been involved in a number of community events over the last two weeks.

On Saturday 13th June officers attended St Mary’s church fete, held in the Glebe field. Pcso’s Dauncey and Smith provided plenty of crime-prevention advice to local residents, and were also able to generate interest regarding a new neighbourhood Watch being set-up.

Later the same day Rutlish PTA held their inaugural summer festival in the schools sports field. Around 200 people attended.

Poplar Primary school had their annual summer fete on Saturday 27th. Several hundred people joined in the beautiful weather.

The Safer Neighbourhood Team bought a 1980 Land Rover traffic-car to the event. Well over 100 youngsters volunteered to have their finger-prints taken, whilst parents and carers were provided with crime-prevention and security advice.

As always, if you have ANY questions at all, please contact us via mertonpark.SNT@met.police.uk or on 0208 721 2451

On Thursday 19th June 2009 Pollards Hill Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) assisted by the Borough Task Force seized a Silver Vauxhall Astra van after it had failed to stop for Police in Yorkshire Road. This vehicle has been seen on a number of occasions being driven and occupied by known criminals who are thought to be responsible for Burglary in the South London area

The driver was found in Monmouth Close after a search of the area by Pollards Hill SNT and Task Force Officers.

The vehicle was found a short time later parked in Mayfield Crescent after good work by the teams Police Community Support Officer’s who showed tenacity and determination when searching a large area.

Although the driver initially denied any involvement property belonging to him was found in the vehicle.

The driver, a 19 year old youth, from Bennetts Close, Mitcham has been reported for failing to stop for police, driving without insurance and driving without a license.

The Vehicle was seized under section 165(a) of the Road Traffic Act which allows Police to seize vehicles being driven on roads where the driver is not insured or does not have a license to drive that vehicle.

The vehicle keeper can claim his vehicle back within 14 days of the seizure on production of a valid certificate of insurance, driving license and the V5 vehicle log book after paying a fine of £105 and a daily storage fee of £12. If the vehicle is not claimed within 14 days the vehicle is crushed

Alleygating is a Local Government subsidised scheme to improve the security of your property by installing vehicular access gates at the entrance to the alleyways which run to the rear of a large proportion of the residential properties on the Pollards Hill Ward.

The scheme requires a minimum financial contribution by residents which is offset by a contribution from Local Government.

A recent scheme involving 50 properties contributing to the scheme which required the installation of a single gate cost each household £26. Each household is given one security key with the option to purchase further keys at the cost of the key being cut.

The installation of a gate will greatly enhance the security to the rear of your property and reduce the propensity of “fly tipping” where the cost of removal is ultimately passed on to residents.

Following the installation at recent schemes we have been able to request the assistance of the Community Payback Team who have cleared a vast amount of rubbish from the alleys.

If your home backs onto an alleyway that you think could benefit from this scheme or would like to know more please contact Pollards Hill Safer Neighbourhood Team by emailing pollards.snt@met.police.uk or calling 0208 649 3604

Bygrove Road Reassurance Bus

June 26, 2009 15:16

Dear residents,

The Colliers Wood Safer Neighbourhoods Team will be taking our reassurance bus to Bygrove Road at the junction with Denison Road this Wednesday 1st July between 6pm and 8pm to meet our residents and listen to their concerns. We will also be offering free bicycle marking and crime prevention advice.

This is as a result of residents concerns around anti-social behaviour in the area after a number of vehicles were damaged in the surrounding roads last week. Four boys have been arrested for the damage and are on bail from Wimbledon Police Station. This is an isolated incident and out of character for Colliers Wood ward where the team work hard to keep anti-social behaviour as low as possible.

Some residents have told us about what they saw but unfortunately at the time did not phone the police. I urge anyone who see’s crime happening to please phone 999 at the time. If you don’t believe it requires an immediate response, lower level incidents can be reported on 0300 123 1212. For non emergency incidents Colliers Wood SNT can be contacted on 0208 721 2743 but this number is not answered 24 hours a day therefore you may have to leave a message and may not get an immediate response. We can also be contacted via email at collierswood.snt@met.police.uk.

Lower Morden Newsletter for 18th June 2009

The Ward Panel meet last night in Aragon School. During the meeting changes in crime trends and perception of issues in Lower Morden where discussed. At the end of the meeting it was decided that the team will now work on FOUR priorities.

1) Burglary
2) Motor Vehicle Crime including Theft of, Theft from and Criminal Damage to M/V
3) ASB by Motorists
4) ASB by Youths

ASB by youths as a problem has fallen over the last few months but it was felt by the Ward Panel that it was best to keep this priority so the work done so far is not lost.

The new priority of Motor Vehicle Crime ahs been added. This is due mainly to a noticeable increase in the number of Vehicles being broken into. These numbers are still not high compared to other wards on the Borough. Between the 12th Mar and 30th Apr, there was 12 motor vehicle related crimes and then between the 1st May and 17th Jun this had increased to 16.

The team will be trying and number of different tactics some of which may include reactive enforcement when individuals involved in these crimes are identified. The team will also be trying to prevent these types of crime by informing motor vehicle owner’s of valuable items that are clearly left on display. The owners of the vehicles will spoke to at the time or a letter with Crime Prevention advice sent.

For individuals on the KIN survey list, these are due again and members of the team will be trying to get round to each of you individually over the next fortnight.

On a tri monthly basis the Ward Panel meets and decides the priorities for the SNT team to work on. This is a group of volunteers from the local community, either resident or who work at a business on the ward. We are still looking for extra members for the Ward Panel if we have any volunteers.

The team continues to provide an effective police response to issue concerning the residents/ visitors to Lower Morden Ward. If you have any concerns re crime or Anti Social Behaviour please contact the team on 0208 721 2456 or email LowerMorden.SNT@met.police.uk

Thanks

Making Figges Marsh Safer

June 17, 2009 12:46

The Figges Marsh Ward Safer Neighbourhoods Team (SNT) is:

Sergeant Matt Shalders
A/Sergeant Louise Vickers
Constable Tony Weston
Constable Jim Jackson
Constable Guy Howford
PCSO Jason Welsh
PCSO Mike Knellar
PCSO Samantha Beazley-Long

Stables Raid (rear of Costcutters, Mitcham Town Centre)

Your SNT executed a search warrant on Thursday 28th May 2009 in partnership with Merton Council colleagues. A man was arrested. He has been convicted at court with possession of drugs. The venue was subject to a closure notice. My team is monitoring this and other local venues. Please contact us (in confidence) via telephone/email should you see or hear suspicious activity in the locality.

National Drugs Awareness Week Event - Mitcham Carnival 2009

Your SNT team took part in the National Tackling Drugs Week that started on Monday the 8th of June. Merton Council's Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) works throughout the year helping those who misuse drugs to get the treatment they need while police safer neighbourhood teams make sure residents' concerns about drug dealing are reported and acted on quickly. National Tackling Drugs Week gives all agencies involved in targeting drugs and drug abuse the chance to publicise their work and tell users about the support available.

Figges Marsh Safer Neighbourhoods Team took the mobile reassurance vehicle to the Mitcham Carnival 2009 where we were available to assist Merton Council in offering advice and literature at this community event.

Officers from Mitcham Safer Neighbourhoods Teams (including Figges Marsh) and the Met’s Special Constabulary patrolled the Mitcham Carnival and adjacent funfair from 11.30 am until 9.30 pm on Saturday 13th June 2009.

Crime Alert - Motor Vehicles

Merton is currently experiencing an increase in the number of thefts from motor vehicle. These crimes are opportunistic. Most cars are broken because valuables have been left on display. Designer handbags and sunglasses, netbooks and sat nav units are common items stolen from cars/vans.

We would advise all vehicle keepers not to leave any valuables on display. If you have a Sat Nav, please ensure you wipe the windscreen clean to remove the tell-tale marks left by the cradle as thieves often break in and search the glovebox and cargo area. Leaving the glovebox empty and open when you leave your car is another good way to deter thieves.

Farewell

Sunday was Karen’s last day on the Figges Marsh SNT. She transfers to neighbouring Cricket Green Ward today (Wednesday 17th June 2009). We wish her well on her new team and in her future police career.

Having joined Figges Marsh SNT in November 2006, the time has come for me to move on. I transfer to the Met’s Territorial Policing Headquarters on Monday 29th June 2009. Acting Sergeant Louise Vickers will take over as team leader.

I would like to thank all my colleagues and partners who have helped make Mitcham a safer place. Please keep up the good work!

Meet the Met

The next Ward Panel Meeting scheduled for Wednesday 17/6/09 has been postponed. Details of the next Panel Meeting will follow shortly.

The current ward policing priorities are (i) tackling anti-social behaviour in Mitcham Town Centre and (ii) residential burglaries in Streatham Roads.

You can meet the Figges Marsh SNT at the following events:

SNT surgery McDonalds Last Thurs of month (12.30 - 2 pm)
Mitcham Status Fair Three Kings 6th - 16th August 2009

To report a crime please call 0300 123 1212 or in an emergency call 999.

You can contact the team, who can provide advice on how to deal with anti-social behaviour, graffiti or other policing issues that affect your quality of life, on 020 8649 3603 or via our email address: FiggesMarsh.SNT@met.police.uk

National Tackling Drugs Week

Last week was National Tackling Drugs week. The team had 2 arrests of note linked to drug use:

On Tuesday 9th June a group was approached by Sergeant Rogerson & PC Tristan Muts in Edenvale Park, Woodland Way. One of the group ran from police and was chased by Tristan who detained him in Park Avenue. He was found in possession of drugs paraphernalia and discovered to have discarded a quantity of cannabis in Park Avenue. He was arrested for possession of cannabis with intent to supply and taken to Wimbledon Police Station.

On Thursday 11th June the Graveney PCSOs came across a male in his car in Edenvale Road. Believing the male may be in possession of drugs they called police officers to the scene who searched the male and his vehicle. He was arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A drugs after officers found 2 wraps of powder where he’d been sitting. He was interviewed at Sutton Police Station and bailed pending laboratory analysis of the suspected drugs.

On the flip-side of drugs enforcement, the team were also involved in actively increasing awareness of drug services on the borough using the Community bus. PC Elaine Parker & PCSO Alex Gonzales parked the bus on Figges Marsh as a drop in centre to gain advice and information on drugs related issues.
As always, please urge your neighbours, colleagues and friends to join up to the CommunitySafe site.

To report Crime please remember to call 999 if there is a crime happening ‘now’ or the new non-emergency number 0300 123 1212 if it has already happened.

Property Marking - Dundonald Park

June 15, 2009 16:12

Dundonald Safer Neighbourhoods Team will be hosting a property marking and crime prevention initiative on Sunday the 19th July 2009 between 2pm-6pm at Dundonald Recreation Ground near the pavilion.

By visibly marking (or UV pen marking) your possessions with your postcode followed by the number of your house or the first three letters of the house name, and illustrating this fact to potential thieves (with stickers), you can reduce the risk of burglary. Additionally, if marked items are stolen and then recovered, it is easier for the police to identify the criminals and return property to its owner.

Please feel free to bring along bikes and small electrical items to be marked.

We currently have a number of vacancies on Dundonald Ward panel. If are interested in having your say at quarterly meetings with your Safer Neighbourhhood Team and being closely involved in setting your local policing priorities then we would be delighted to hear from you.

Please feel free to contact Dundonald Safer Neighbourhoods Team for further information.

PROBLEM PUB CLOSED DOWN

June 15, 2009 15:09

A pub that served as an underage drinking den for youths from across south and west London has been shut down.

A Merton council licensing committee was told that Dundonald safer neighbourhoods team and relief officers had conducted numerous licensing visits at the Junction Tavern in Kingston Road SW20 in relation to complaints about underage drinking at the public house. On numerous occasions officers found underage youths within the pub drinking alcohol.

On Friday 29th May 2009 the Kingston Road pub was shut for three months by Merton Council’s licensing sub-committee, which also demanded the removal of landlady Nicolina Collins.
In a hearing at the council chambers in Morden, Sergeant Peter Sparham and Sergeant Jeff New told councillors how the police made visits to the pub every few weeks from January to April this year.
Despite frequent warnings to Ms Collins, dozens of 16 and 17-year-olds were found drinking alcohol.
Most said they had not been asked for identification when buying drinks.
Sgt Sparham said: “There seems to be a wholesale disregard for the law.
"It has to be improved. There has been ample warning, and it has not been heeded in the slightest.”
One visit on January 16 uncovered about 40 underage drinkers.
When police tried to clear the pub, a crowd of more than 100 people gathered, fighting broke out and a glass was thrown at an officer, the committee was told.
On February 20, a policeman had the door shut and locked in his face while youths fled through a rear exit.
When the police eventually got into the pub, they found around 50 of the 75 drinkers were underage.
During the hearing, Ms Collins admitted the door had been locked by her staff, but said it was to stop more drinkers coming in.
She said she was “very sorry” for serving the youths, and promised to be more vigilant in the future.
But she was banned from running the pub by the committee, and the pub’s owners Admiral Taverns (Nevada) Ltd will now have to close it down for three months.
Councillor David Simpson, chair of the committee, said: “We take underage drinking very seriously.
"Clear, unchallenged evidence has been given showing a continuous disregard for underage drinking at this establishment.”

Cricket Green Ward Update 14/06/09

Cricket Green Ward Update 14/06/2009

Junior Wardens Scheme

Thirty 10-year-olds from Benedict School in Mitcham are currently making their community a better place to live by becoming ‘junior wardens’.
The class are being trained over 12 weeks by the Cricket Green Safer Neighbourhoods team, the local neighbourhood wardens and L&Q staff. They are going on walkabouts of the area and special outings. They will also learn more about the fire brigade and the police and meet with councillors and officers from Merton Council.
The Junior warden scheme is encouraging pupils to become more aware of their environment, become more responsible citizens and to dissuade them from crime and anti-social behaviour later in their lives. The scheme is covering the role of neighbourhood wardens, anti-social behaviour, environmental crime, road safety, the use of CCTV, safety in and around the home as well as an awareness of the local neighbourhood.'
‘Junior wardens’ aims to increase children’s sense of community responsibility and promote good citizenship’. It should also improve their awareness of issues that may affect them at school and in their community.
At the end of the programme the children will be presented with certificates by either the Mayor or a local councillor at the Civic Centre.

National Drugs Awareness week

The team have taken part in the National Tackling Drugs Week that started on Monday the 8th of June. Cricket Green Safer Neighbourhoods Team took the mobile reassurance vehicle down to the Phipps Bridge Estate where in partnership with the Council we were available to provide help and advice for most of the day.

Youth Priority Success! – Pedal Cycle Thefts from the Youth Centre

Following the priority set by young people from the Phipps Bridge Youth Centre for the team to tackle pedal cycle thefts from the youth centre the team attended on two occasions last month and gave advice on crime prevention and cycle security. We were able to provide the Youth Club with some cycle locks so that children without their own would be able to lock their bikes up when they attended. A follow up visit was conducted on the 2nd of June and since we provided the locks there have been no further reported thefts of pedal cycles from the Youth Centre and it has been agreed to close this as a team priority.
As the visits have proved a positive experience for both Police and the youths we will be attending on more occasions in the future to discuss other matters such as stop and search which the children have mentioned they would like to cover. Should they come up with any other issues that they would like us to look at we will set up another priority.

Crime Alert

Currently the borough is experiencing an increase in the amount of thefts from motor vehicle.
These crimes are usually opportunist. Most cars are broken in to as a result of property being left inside the car on display. Bags, laptops and satellite navigation are the main items stolen.
We would advise all vehicle owners not to leave any items on display. If you have a Sat Nav then please ensure that you wipe clean the windscreen to remove the tell tale marks left by the cradle as thieves will often break in to see if it has been left in the glovebox.
Leaving the glovebox empty and open when you leave your car is another way to deter would be thieves as it only takes seconds for someone to smash your window and look inside. Don’t forget to remove your radio facia and don’t leave items in the boot.

Neighbourhood panel meeting.

The last panel meeting unfortunately had to be postphoned. The next meeting is now on Wednesday the 24th of June 2009. We will be discussing and deciding on the priorities for the team over the next few months so if you have anything you would like us to look at then please let us know.

Your team consists of Sergeant Dan Hutchings, PC Simon Wallace, PC Paul Dodson, PCSO Tracy Whayman, PCSO Lynn Marsch and PCSO Christopher Osmond.

We can be contacted on 0208 649 3576 or at CricketGreen.SNT@met.police.uk. We can provide advice on how to deal with anti social behaviour, graffiti problems or any other issues that are affecting your quality of life.

To report a crime please call 0300 123 1212 or in an emergency call 999.

Sergeant Dan Hutchings
