Team to deliver Home Security Survey's

March 16, 2010 15:53

Dear Members,

You may recall my recent message gave house owners the opportunity of a free Crime Prevention Survey conducted by the local Safer Neighbourhoods Team. I am pleased to say the uptake has been very good. Each household the team have visited has been left with informative crime prevention advice regarding how their properties security could be improved. The team are extending the Crime Prevention Survey into April so if you would like a member of the team to visit please contact the team on 0208 721 2459 or email us to arrange a date and time convenient.
December 2008 - Feb 2009 saw 15 reported burglaries compared to 9 during the same period December 2009 - Feb 2010. Although the later figure is not acceptable I feel the teams work in this area has effectively reduced crimes of this nature. This has been achieved by conducting high visibility single patrols and as already mentioned Crime Prevention Surveys.
Burglary can have a long lasting emotional impact on victims, leaving them feeling isolated and vulnerable. However, by taking just a few simple measures, you can reduce the chances of it happening to you. Most burglaries tend to be opportunistic, rather than planned. Burglars usually choose houses that have little or no visible security.

When you leave your home it’s important to ensure you leave it as secure as possible.
WHAT TO DO BEFORE YOU LEAVE YOUR HOME
1. Close and lock all your doors and windows, even if you are
only going out for a few minutes.
2. Set your burglar alarm
3. Make sure the side and/or back gate is locked.
4. Lock your shed or garage
5. Make sure that any valuables are not in sight
6. Put keys out of reach of letterboxes
7. In the evening, shut the curtains and leave some lights on.
8. Never leave car documents or ID in obvious places such as kitchens or hallways.

By observing the above tips I suggest you will greatly reduce the opportunity of becoming a victim of this type of crime.

On another note: Do you know of a budding athlete aged 14 -17 years?
Met Track is a free professional athletic coaching for 10-17 year olds. It is being re launched in the borough on Thursday 25th March at 4pm until 5.30pm at The Hub, Tooting and Mitcham FC, Bishopsford Road, Morden. West Barnes mid March update

March 16, 2010 11:26

TEAM NEWS
The team along with Police Cadets, Special Constables, Licensing Officers and supported by other Safer Neighbourhood Teams conducted a test purchase operation on all the shops selling alcohol on the ward. The 16 year old cadets entered the shops and tried to buy the alcohol. With the Easter holidays approaching I am pleased to say none of the shops on the ward served the youths.
We have also been conducting vehicle speed checks on West Barnes Lane and Claremont Avenue.
As well as targeting the specific objective of the operation such as licensing and speeding these operations also support the burglary and vehicle crime prevention strategies by putting a lot of officers on the ward. Anyone travelling through with ill intent will see this and be put off from the area.
BURGLARY AND VEHICLE CRIME UPDATE
No further house burglaries have been reported on the ward since 11/02/10. Vehicle Crime has lowered again. Of note a car was stolen from Tennyson Avenue on 13/3/10. This is the first car to have been taken from the ward for quite a long time.

March 14, 2010 07:36

Dear Members,

On the eveving of Thursday 11th March 2010, a Burglary/Robbery occurred in the area of Pimlico.

NEWSLETTERS
The safer neighbourhoods newsletters are currently in production and will be distributed to every household on the borough. They should have all been distributed by the end of May. If after this time you have not received a copy and would like one then please contact us and we will deliver one.

PCSO STEVE
PCSO Steve has arrived as a permanent attachment to the Borough, kindly funded by Safer Merton’s Joint Tasking Group. He will be based at Mitcham Police Station and will be available for guest appearances at local schools and events in the Borough. In the past PCSO Steve’s valuable time had to be shared by a large number of London boroughs making his availability limited.

PC Louise Vickers successfully applied for funding to Safer Merton’s Joint Tasking Group which now enables PCSO Steve to be in Merton Borough on a full time basis. Inspector Jon Phillips stated “This will give the children of Merton more opportunities to meet PCSO Steve and for important messages to be delivered in a fun and friendly way, as well as introducing pupils to their local Safer Neighbourhood Team thereby building stronger community links.”

If you would like PCSO Steve to visit your school then please contact your local Safer Neighbourhoods Team.

Burglary update March 2010

March 12, 2010 12:00

There has been a slight increase in burglaries within the last two weeks. These are split into two areas, one around Chestnut Grove and the other around Lancaster Avenue and Berkshire Way. The main problem times are between midday and 4pm. Please contact Pollards Hill Safer Neighbourhood about any suspicious behaviour or in emergency dial 999. Point of entry varies between front or rear doors as well as windows being smashed and the property taken includes high value televisions and laptops. The people carrying out these burglaries are probably not from this area. If anyone looks out of place or is acting suspiciously please report it.

There has been one incident recently in Johnson Close where a male and female gained entry to a house stating they were care workers. It was discovered later that cash had been removed from a drawer in the bedroom. If anyone knocks on your door please ask for identification. If they do not have identification do not let them in. Check with the suitable head office before you let any individual into your home. The people that commit these crimes are experts and will appear authentic. Be particularly careful with any appointments that have not been arranged such as water or gas leaks. If in doubt call the police or Pollards Hill Safer Neighbourhood team on the number below.

Besides the slight recent increase in February, burglary remains down from last year. We can only continue to improve on this with your help.

Pollards Hill next drop in surgery at the New Horizon Centre on South Lodge Avenue is on 26th March at 7pm until 8pm. Please take this opportunity to speak with us about any issue.
For any further information please contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team on 0208 649 3604 or by email at Pollards.SNT@met.police.uk
If you wish to become a member of Community safe and sign up to free crime alerts and news of what your local safer Neighbourhood Team is up to please contact them direct or join via www.communitysafe.gov.uk.

BURGLARY advice

March 11, 2010 21:05

Since the start of February to date ( 11th March ) there have been 3 residential burglaries within the whole of Merton Park. These occurred in roads to the south and east of the ward.

Entry at one was via the UNLOCKED rear patio doors, and we urge ALL residents to please ensure that ALL doors and windows are locked whenever they leave their homes.

Burglars have been successfully thwarted at 4 other premises. Although attempts were made, entry was unsuccessful due to the security measures home-owners had taken.

Merton Park Police Community Support Officer, Will Dauncey is now able to give bespoke Crime Prevention advice to Merton Park residents free of charge

Having been on the ward for nearly 2 years, he is excellently placed to give advice around security within your home. He is able to consider the local issues particularly affecting your road as well as general security measures specific to your house.

Please contact us, either via mertonpark.SNT@met.police.uk or 0208 721 2451 to arrange a visit to your home at a time which is convenient to you.

More general advice on products available to home owners is available on www.securedbydesign.com

Finally, a warm welcome to our latest members, many of who live in or around Daybrook Road and Kenley Road. We hope that you find this free service useful. Should you wish to recommend it to others, then please ensure they sign up to Merton Police - Merton Park
Thank You

Stonecot Safer Neighbourhood Team has been working to tackle boy racers who have been congregating at Tesco’s car park in Oldfields Road on Thursday evenings. Combined use of the CCTV van, local officers and specialist traffic units has enabled them to reduce the number of incidents, together with numerous ‘stops’ as well as tickets for various offences. All of which have helped to tackle this issue.

Officers from Sutton Police station have closed down three cannabis factories following raids at three separate addresses in Carshalton and Sutton. About 100 plants were found at Waverley Way, Carshalton, whilst between 30-50 plants were found at the other two addresses in Oliver Road, Sutton, and Peterborough Road, Carshalton. Three men and three women have been arrested on suspicion of cultivating cannabis and have been bailed pending further enquiries.

The properties raided included both privately owned and let premises. Police urge landlords to make regular checks on their lettings. It is in landlords’ interests to make regular checks as significant damage can be caused to properties as a result of these factories. Police ask residents to report comings and goings of occupiers at odd times of the day and night; curtains closed permanently to hide the blazing lights required to grow the plants; and sweet smells emanating from the property.

Officers from Sutton’s Safer Neighbourhood Teams spoke to dozens of residents and made around 50 ‘stops’ on individuals during a ‘Day of Action’ in Woodcote Road and Wallington Square.
Officers made one arrest for a deception offence and also issued £80 Fixed Penalty Notices to two drivers for having no insurance and three drivers for not wearing a seat belt.
The Day of Action occurred as a result of concerns raised by some residents following detailed engagement with the communities in Wallington. Residents had raised concerns about groups of youths and undesirable groups gathering, speeding vehicles, inconsiderate parking and litter.
Insp Colin Baker said: "These days are all about high visibility policing to reassure the public that we are listening to what they are telling us and taking appropriate action."
