Lambeth safer schools officers manage the summer project on site
From Monday 26 July and for the twenty-third successive year Lambeth Borough Met Police will be supporting the Lambeth Summer Project. An initiative for school children during their four week summer holiday to become involved in activities they may not have experienced while interacting positively with the police.
This is one of the longest running and largest youth engagement/crime prevention and positive activities programme of its kind in London.
This year over 750 young people aged from nine to sixteen years old will be participating in the project each day. Four school sites will be kept open and managed by Lambeth borough Police Safer Schools officers with assistance from Police Community Support Officers. Lambeth local authority is providing youth workers and there will be a significant number of community volunteers.
Over 600 separate activity sessions will take place including sports, outside visits and workshops.
Officers from CO19 Met Police firearms branch, Operation Trident, Territorial Support Unit and Safer Neighbourhoods will be interacting with many hundreds of Lambeth's young people and building positive relationships with the local communities in the borough.
Chief Inspector Patrick Beynon of Lambeth Safer Neighbourhoods said: “Lambeth Summer Project will celebrate its 23rd anniversary this year. It reflects the strong police, and the third sector.
Our successful partnerships with the local authority and other partners have ensured the success of this project for such positive activities for young people.
Without this project some of the young people involved could become victims or perpetrators of crime and anti-social behaviour. “
