Hillside Update 04 Dec 11:51
“You said, we did “ Currently the ward priorities that your team are working on are as follows Burglary The team have been increasing patrols both in uniform and plain clothes within the residential areas. Burglary figures remain low for Hillside. In the run up to the festive period can I ask all residents to be vigilant around leaving presents on show underneath the Christmas tree. When Christmas Day has come and gone and all the presents have been opened please do not let the burglar know that you have got a new Xbox or computer by leaving the empty boxes on the street outside your premises. The Police find an increase in burglary after Christmas and one of the causes is the fact that residents advertise that they have brand new electrical items in the house. Your team will be checking on all vulnerable premises over the Christmas period, but please help us to help you by taking all necessary precautions. Anti-social Behaviour The police are aware of a continuing trend of anti-social and intimidating behaviour carrying on within Hillside Ward. This is primarily evident in Wimbledon Town Centre. Over the traditionally busy period of Halloween and Bonfire night we have conducted high visibility evening patrols of the ward to prevent and detect anti-social behaviour. Youths coming onto Hillside from surrounding wards and boroughs to behave in an anti-social manner were stopped and made to account for their presence and behaviour. A number of arrests were made over this period. Christmas is traditionally a time when social drinking increases and the police ask that you enjoy a drink responsibly in the coming weeks. Efforts are being made to combat anti-social drinking with the introduction of the “Behave Or Be Banned” (BOBB) initiative. This scheme is aimed at tackling nuisance drinkers who can and will be banned from the town’s pubs, bars and clubs if they are arrested for their behaviour. Christmas is traditionally a time when social drinking increases and the police ask that you enjoy a drink responsibly. Hillside officers do not wish to stop anyone enjoying themselves. In fact BOBB is designed to make a night out more enjoyable by banning the loutish few who are aiming to spoil other drinkers’ fun. Bars on Hillside that are supporting BOBB are All Bar One, The Alexandra and The Hand & Racquet. Motor Vehicle Crime Between January and October 2009 there have been twenty-nine reported incidents of motor vehicle crime. This comprises of six cases of a stolen vehicle and twenty-three occasions where property has been stolen from a vehicle. There has been a developing trend of petrol tanks being emptied after being drilled out. This is happening on Hillside and surrounding wards. We ask motorists to be sure to lock your vehicles when leaving them unattended. Please take all valuable items with you and conceal those that remain in the car. This includes Sat-Nav holders affixed to windscreens. When removed, most of these holders leave a tell tale round mark on the glass. Be sure to wipe this mark off. We do not want people to be afraid of crime, however it is vital that all efforts are made to deter would be thieves. At future public surgeries Hillside officers will be handing out Sat-Nav wipes to remove sucker marks from windscreens and number plate screws so number plates can’t be stolen with out a special tool. Met launches Christmas crackdown on drunk and drug driving Londoners are being warned of the dangers of drink and drug driving in the lead up to the festive season as the Metropolitan Police Service launches its Christmas anti-drink and drug driving campaign. The month-long campaign, starting on Tuesday 1 December, supports the annual Association of Chief Police Officers and the Department of Transport's national anti-drink and drug driving Christmas THINK campaign. Officers from the MPS Traffic Unit and boroughs will be carrying out a series of dedicated patrols and local operations across the capital. This includes increased roadside breath tests to test drink driving, and a series of exercises known as Field Impairment Tests (FITs), designed to test for drugs. Partygoers, in particular, may be unaware they are still over the limit the morning after a Christmas celebration. This year also sees the first time that both Traffic and borough officers will be equipped with electronic screening devices (ESDs); these are sophisticated new systems capable of recording additional information such as sex, age and location, which could help to provide a clearer profile of offenders in the future. Anyone who is found to be driving under the influence of drink or drugs will be arrested and taken into custody. Offenders can lose their licence, be fined, or sent to prison. Chief Superintendent David Snelling, Head of the MPS Traffic Unit, said: "Some people may think it's harmless to drive home after a few drinks, particularly during the Christmas season when they want to go out and celebrate the festive period with friends and family. Sadly we know that's not true, and officers are out on the streets every day dealing with the grief and devastation caused by these decisions. "Drink and drug drivers need to be aware there are very real consequences to their actions. Not only do they risk arrest and imprisonment, they are also putting themselves and the lives of others at danger. Why would you do that?" Advice from the Met: * If drinking, make alternative arrangements to get home that does not involve driving. * Take a licensed taxi, black cabs or minicabs. * Appoint a designated driver for the evening who will be drinking soft drinks only. * Take care when driving the morning after you have been drinking as alcohol may still be in your system and you may be over the limit. Likewise, be careful about drinking at lunchtime. Hillside officers will be giving drink drive advice and testing outside The Alexandra, Wimbledon Hill Road on Wednesday 9th December between 6pm and 8pm.
