Crime Prevention. 14 Dec 09:15
An open house is an open invitation Are you secure? Keep your property safe this winter by reading the following information and taking the necessary preventative measures: During the month of November 2008 there has been an increase in residential burglaries in Merton and its immediate surrounds. The burglaries have largely taken place during weekdays and at week-ends when property has been unattended. Some have also occurred in the evening. Burglary, on the whole, is an opportunist crime. A burglar will select his target because it offers him the best opportunity to carry out his crime undetected and with the fewest number of obstacles in his way. A building that presents itself as unoccupied and insecure is far more likely to be targeted than one which is properly secured. When you leave your home ensure that all windows and final exit doors are double locked. Ensure that your front and back doors have at least two locks fitted centrally on the door at least 14 inches apart. Check your door locks. Check they have the British standard kite mark If they don’t change them for ones that do. You may be entitled to a reduction in your insurance premium. Residents over 60 may be entitled to have their locks upgraded free of charge under a scheme run by the London Borough of Merton (MESH). Install timers which switch lights or radios on and off automatically. If going out after dark, draw the curtains, leave some lights on and a radio playing. Never leave a spare key concealed anywhere near the front door - burglars know all the hiding places. Prevent letterbox burglaries by storing keys away from the front door.
