On Wednesday the 12 of January 2011 at Barclays Bank South Ealing Road W5 a member of the public attempted to withdraw cash from the cash machine. The machine instructed him to remove his cash but none came out. On inspecting the dispensing slot at the bottom he found that a piece of metal had been placed over the slot. It very closely resembled the slots own cover but was clearly on top of it. He called police and remained with the machine. His money had been drawn back inside the machine and therefore he did not lose any cash.
Please be aware of this type of crime. When using these machines check them to ensure they have not been tampered with. If in doubt don’t use it, contact the branch or phone the number shown on the outside of the machine during closing times. If you find a machine which has been tampered with contact police and if possible don’t leave the machine until police arrive.

At 3pm on Wednesday 15 December 2010, two officers from the Borough were attacked whilst dealing with a man stopped in Ealing Broadway. A police officer received serious injuries and has undergone surgery. He remains in a serious but stable condition. A PCSO also received stab wounds. He has been treated and released from hospital.
A man is in custody and a weapon has been recovered at the scene. We encourage anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward and speak to police. Contact your local SNT or call the incident room on 020 8721 4205.
This is a shocking incident, but it is extremely rare for police officers to receive injuries of this nature on duty. Be assured that the business of policing the Ealing Borough will continue as normal.

Dear residents,
We are bringing to your notice a couple incidents that have occured recently on Southfield Ward.
On Monday morning 8th November two burglaries were reported to police that occured overnight. Both were on streets neighbouring each other. Both however were similar in the way the suspect gained entry. Criminals that place their hands through letterboxes in order to unlock the front door have struck several times recently on the ward and this has happened again at these two addresses.
Although we are trying as hard as possible to arrest these offenders, there are a few measures residents can take to possibly avoid becoming victims of this particular crime.
Firstly double lock your front doors when going out and in particular overnight. Secondly, do not leave either house nor car keys in the vicinity of the front door. Burglars are often equipped with articles to assist them in stealing keys even if you believe they are out of reach.
And lastly we recommend letter box guards.

Dear Residents,
I am writing to you to highlight an issue that is causing problems not only on Southfield Ward but across Ealing Borough in general.
Robbery of mobile phones is still continuing and it is a problem that can be reduced if a few simple steps are taken. Most of the crime reports we recieve on Southfield Ward are where the victim of this crime is walking alone often having just left a train station or come off a bus.
As they walk along they use their phone either to make a telephone call or to text someone. As they do this they are completely unaware that someone (offender) is approaching them form behind often on pedal cycles.
The phone is then grabbed from the unsupecting victim.
Our advice is to only make a call whilst walking to your destination if it is urgent. The darker evenings in particular highlight the fact someone is using their mobile as it lights up when in use.
Please be aware of your surroundings in respect of this.

Dear Residents,
There a couple of events taking place in Chiswick in September that we feel might be useful for you to know about.
Firstly the front office at Chiswick Police Station will be closed from Monday 6th September 2010 for approximately one week to allow building works work to take place. This refurbishment will not impact on police operations from the building and officers will be patrolling the local community as normal.
Members of the public who need to attend the front office at Chiswick during this time can contact the police in one of several ways -
By visiting front offices at neighbouring police stations - Brentford, Acton, Hammersmith and Hounslow will all be open as shown on www.met.police.uk
By calling the police control room on 0300 123 1212
By contacting your local Safer Neighbourhoods Team, details of which can be found on www.met.police.uk/saferneighbourhoods
Non urgent reports of crime can also be made at www.met.police.uk In an emergency always dial 999.
Secondly on Saturday September 11th, organisations from across West London will be on Chiswick Common for the 2nd Chiswick Community Safety Day. Between 10am and 4pm, there will be stands and events taking place that will showcase the work of community safety agencies working in Chiswick. Ranging from the blue light services to local charities, the event will be an opportunity for local residents to see how much work goes into helping the local area. As well as this, there will be stands from organisations helping young people, displays and competitions for visitors to watch and take part in.
The event will include stands from the fire brigade, air ambulance, police, the local council and many more besides. Admission is free and there will be a live radio broadcast from the event.
Local charities will also be supported - The Dukes Meadow Trust, Meadow House Hospice, Age UK and the Tommy Hollis Fund will all be in attendance on the day.
Although this event has been organised by Chiswick Police (Hounslow Borough) officers from Southfield SNT will also there on the day so please come along and have a chat.

Dear residents
We have recieved a letter from a concerned resident and we feel that it is a matter that you should be aware of:
Hello
i just had a call from something like the "crime research association" offering a free burglar alarm to selected properties in Valetta Rd. When pressed i was told that although the alarm was free there would be an unspecified monitoring charge. I then looked this up on the internet and discovered this has already been reported as a scam in different parts of the country:
http://www.guardian-series.co.uk/news/rbnews/5041925.REDBRIDGE__Council_warns_of_burglar_alarm_scam/
http://blogs.mirror.co.uk/investigations/2010/03/beware-free-burglar-alarm-offe.html
The caller was particularly interested in finding out if i was over 80 and the above reports stress the elderly are targeted. Given there are a number of elderly residents in Valetta Rd would it be worth alerting people to the dangers of responding to this kind of call?
Please be aware of the implications should you be offered this service.

Vehicle Watch
Ealing Police are launching a vehicle watch scheme to assist in reducing the number of vehicles stolen in the Borough. Residents are being supplied with stickers to display, if appropriate, in the rear window of their vehicle to highlight any unusual usage. This will invite the police to stop the vehicle, when operationally possible, and to check that driver is in lawful possession.
Vehicle Watch Overnight (12 - 5am): Vehicles that are not normally used overnight should display an Overnight 12 - 5am sticker. This will invite police officers to stop and confirm the lawful ownership of any vehicle displaying this sticker that they see being used between these times.
Vehicle Watch 25+ : If your vehicle is not normally driven by anyone under the age of 25 years, then by displaying a 25+ sticker you will invite police officers to stop and confirm the lawful ownership of any vehicle displaying this sticker that they see being used by a person who appears to be below this age group.
Please note that the stickers are designed to be difficult to remove so should not be used as a short term measure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. My vehicle is not used overnight or by drivers under 25. Can I display both stickers?
A. Yes you can.
Q. What will happen if I display an "Overnight 12-5am" sticker and use the vehicle during this time, will I commit an offence or be arrested?
A. No you won’t. The police officer will simply ask you a few questions to confirm that you are the owner or driving with the owner’s permission. The same is true if a younger person drives the vehicle showing a "25+" sticker.
Q. Will the police keep details of my vehicle if I join the scheme?
A. No. Unlike similar schemes run in the past, the police have no record of people displaying stickers.
Q. How do I remove the sticker if I sell my car or my circumstances change?
A. The stickers are designed to be difficult to remove (so they can't easily be removed by a thief who wants to steal your vehicle), however they can be scraped off given enough time.
It is obviously preferable that the vehicle not be stolen in the first place. It is difficult to steal modern vehicles, which are equipped with immobilisers, without first stealing the keys.
• Look after your car keys - don’t leave them on a hall table where they can be “fished” for through the letter box or in an unattended jacket or bag when at work or leisure.
• Never leave keys in the ignition - for however a short a time paying for petrol, buying a paper, warming up the car etc.
• Consider fitting a “Thatcham” approved electronic immobiliser if the car doesn’t have one.
• Sold Secure test other types of security equipment - steering wheel locks, gearstick/handbrake locks etc
Please contact your respective ward teams for further information
Thanks,
South Acton Ward

A residential burglary was reported to police on Park Avenue, Southall on the 10th June.
The suspects have called at the address pretending to be workman from a railway company. Whilst one of the suspects has asked the occupier to accompany him to the back garden to view access to the railway lines the other two males have entered his house and stolen items.
The group consisted of one white male aged between 45 to 50, and two other males aged around 20 (one black and one white).
It is very important that should anyone knock at your door claiming to be carrying out railway repairs that you check their ID credentials very carefully before allowing them access to your property.
Do you have information that could assist police with this burglary? Did you see or hear anything suspicious
Please call CMU on 020 8246 1182 and quote ref Cris 2516625/10

Norwood Green Safer Neighbourhoods Team have been asked by Superintendent Ian Jenkins to consult locally with significant community leads on the proposed sale of Norwood Green Police Station.
As most of you will be aware Norwood Green Police Station was closed in late 2008 following a consultation exercise. Although it has been boarded up and empty since that time it remains as part of the Metropolitan Police Service estate.
The Metropolitan Police Authority have asked for a further consultation exercise to be completed in relation to the disposal of Norwood Green Police Station.
The building was constructed in 1889 and bequeathed to the Met in 1890 for use as a police station; the doors opened for business on Monday 16th June 1890.
The legal side of this legacy has been looked into and this does not stop the building from being sold.
The Station Office was shut a number of years before the closure of the police station and the building was used as a base for two safer neighbourhoods teams and a number of safer schools officers.
These officers have now been re-housed at The Arches Business Centre in Merrick Road, Southall at a purpose built safer neighbourhoods base.
We have been asked to highlight the following points.
Norwood Green Police Station is not fit for purpose for modern policing. It will cost a significant amount of money to make any improvements.
The Arches has been opened and it is accessible to communities in Southall. It is a viable alternative.
The Arches is the ward base for two Safer Neighbourhood Teams, who are working to deliver community policing.
The Safer Neighbourhood Officers continue to patrol on their ward areas, working to make Ealing a safer place to live, work and visit.
Any finances raised from the sale of Norwood Green Police Station would be available for the improvement of other police buildings on Ealing Borough.
This is your opportunity to have a say in the proposed sale of Norwood Green Police Station.
Please contact Norwood Green SNT with your email address so that we can send you a questionnaire to fill out, and a letter from the Superintendent.
There is a very tight deadline for this consultation and all replies must be back with Superintendent Jenkins by Monday 5th July 2010.
You can hand your completed questionnaires in at The Arches SNT Base or send them to;

Dear Residents
We have recently had an incident on Southfield Ward where a resident has been the unfortunate victim of "hard luck" story. A young white girl, smartly dressed in her early twenties and appeared to be 4 to 5 months pregnant, knocked on the residents door and stated that she had not got any money to get to work as she had misplaced her hand bag with her Oyster card inside. Many people who use this story often ask to use the residents phone from which they dial a number which the resident is charged often at a very considerable rate. Please dont let them "borrow" your phone. The resident took pity on this female and "lent" her £10. Not suprisingly the female has not been seen since.
Could we please remind you all that in alot of these cases the "victims" story often seems a plausible one. We urge you therefore that if this happens to you not to let any one into your property and if the person genuinely appears distressed and in need of assistance that you call 999 for one of the emergency services. If the person is genuine they will remain there and wait for help.
Theft from motor vehicles continues to be a problem especially now in the warm weather. There has been a recent incident on the ward where a driver has left the front passenger window open whilst driving. When she came to a stop a thief on a pedal cycle reached in and grabbed her bag which was on the seat next to her and made off. Please be aware of this.

Artifice Burglary
We have recently had a Burglary on Avenue Road, Acton W3. The suspect tricked his way in to the victims home in order to steal property from the address. The victim was an elderly female. Whilst taking the rubbish out a male entered her address and when approached by the victim, he stated that he had come to fix the washing machine, and asked her to empty out her cupboard next to the washing machine. Whilst the victim did this the suspect took her handbag and purse.
Please be aware that people will use deception in order to gain access to properties in order to steal valuables. Do not grant access to people unless you are certain they are from a legitimate organisation and always ask for identification.
If you receive a knock on the door from somebody in circumstances you deem to be suspicious, and strongly suspect it to be a bogus call please do not grant them access to your home and call 999. You could also contact your Safer Neighbourhoods Team, or alternatively call the non emergency number on 0300 123 1212. If you require an immediate response always dial 999.
Many Thanks,
South Acton SNT

Hi folks,
This is the London Neighbourhood Watch Association Newsletter #32
NEIGHBOURHOOD & HOME WATCH NETWORK
Neighbourhood & Home Watch Network (England & Wales), opened its new offices in Leicester on 17 May 2010. Leicestershire Constabulary has, for the past 3 years, supported NHWN by providing the movement with an office and facilities for the national chair, Marion Lewis, at Harborough Police Station. Following a grant of £180,000 from the Home Office, NHWN, which is an independent charity, has been able to recruit 3 new staff to help manage and support the 7.9 million NHW national membership and have relocated to a new office in Leicester. The location was chosen because of its central position and minimal costs to the organization.
NHWN is the official body which represents all Neighbourhood & Home Watches across England and Wales and was set up in 2007 when the then national association went into liquidation. The NHWN was formed following extensive consultation with NHW members and associations. It is the only official national body which represents ALL NHW members in the nine regions of England and Wales and is fully supported by the Home Office and the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO). Full details can be found on its website: www.mynhw.co.uk
Chair of the Trustees of NHWN Marion Lewis said ’’I am delighted that following a search which took us to view many offices across England, the NHWN has chosen to continue to stay within the East Midlands region and in particular Leicestershire.’’
The new staff took up their posts at the Beaumont Enterprise Centre on 17 May 2010.
NHWN Operations Director - Kate Daisley - will manage the strategic development of NHWN, implement the Business Plan and play a key part in supporting the national board to deliver agreed outcomes.
NHWN Development Manager - Sundeep Gill - will support NHWN members, NHW associations and grassroots groups in delivering their activities and outcomes. She will also work with all members to ensure a wide participation in annual events including NHW Week.
NHWN Information & Database Officer - Claire Dunn - will support NHWN regional reps and local associations and grassroots groups by:
Developing co-ordinated systems to share information;
Developing and managing the database of members and partners; and
Be the first point of contact for all enquiries
For further details please contact: NHWN, Beaumont Enterprise Centre, 72 Boston Road, Leicester, LE4 1HB - Tel: 0116 2293 118 or e-mail: nhwn.1@btinternet.com
ORDERING FREE NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH MATERIAL FROM THE HOME OFFICE
Due to the recent government changes, the Home Office website, along with the Crime Reduction Catalogue is being updated to fall in line with new policies and is generally being improved.
During this period, no orders can be made via the website, so registration is not necessary, however you can place orders by phoning the ordering line on 0870 241 4680 or by emailing either onlinehomeoffice@prolog.co.uk or homeoffice@prolog.co.uk.
Full details of publications and stickers etc available for Neighbourhood Watch and Home Watch members can be found on the official Neighbourhood & Home Watch web site using this link: Ordering For NHW
NEW TWIST ON STEALING CARS
An incident in Orpington is worth repeating here.
Presumably, having watched the mother leave for the shops, a man in a grey Fiat pulled up and a casually dressed, 40ish white male with stubble knocked on the door asking for 'the driver' of the Ford Focus parked in the driveway. The children said their parents weren't in. The man then said he had come to collect the keys so he can take the car for its MOT. Luckily the kids were immediately suspicious and refused to hand over the keys (also containing the house keys).

HMR&C do not as a matter of course offer “refunds” but there is an e-mail address to which you can forward fake offers such as this - phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk
SMART WATER
SmartWater is an anti-criminal system marketed in by Smartwater Technology Ltd. It consists of a liquid containing a code which can be read under ultraviolet light and is intended to be applied to valuable items so that, if they are stolen and later seized by police, their original owner can be determined. Another application is a sprinkler system that sprays a burglar with the (invisible) fluid which can't be washed off and lasts for months to generate evidence which connects a suspect to a specific location.
SmartWater is currently running a programme with several London Boroughs in partnership with the Borough Police. As a result, NW members can purchase SmartWater at the price the Police pay, namely £15.00 per kit plus VAT & Postage. This is a significant saving as the normal retail price for a household kit is £59.88 per annum. An added benefit is that there is no renewal fee in relation to this offer. If anyone is interested, please contact Kieran Madden, Police Partnership Manager, SmartWater Technology Ltd (Mobile: 07738 252151 or Tel: 0870 242 8899) and ask for special Neighbourhood Watch price.
Well, that’s it for this month. Thanks for listening and, as always, on behalf of the London Neighbourhood Watch Association, I thank each of you for your work and support.
Kind regards,
Alfred J Kennedy
Treasurer
The London Neighbourhood Watch Association Limited

As the weather gets warmer it is inevitable that we will make use of our gardens and also open windows and doors.
If you are going out or even going to a separate part of the house please remember to close and lock windows and doors. It is important we do not present an easy entrance to opportunistic criminals.
Remember the majority of burglaries take place during the day.
Many Thanks,
South Acton SNT
