WESTMINSTER PROMISES TO STAND BY MUSLIM COMMUNITY
Westminster Council has written to London\'s Muslim leaders, promising them the authority will not tolerate a backlash against their community in the capital.
In an open letter to Muslim communities in the city, council leader Cllr Simon Milton said he was \"deeply saddened\" by the attacks at Kings Cross, Tavistock Square, Edgware Road and Aldgate. He added: \"I want to assure you that, whatever the motives of the perpetrators of those explosions, Westminster Council is now even more determined to stand shoulder to shoulder with the city\'s many faith groups against racial and religious intolerance. \"London undoubtedly owes its spirit and vitality to the many communities and faiths that coexist side by side.
Bigotry, racism and Islamophobia and any form of religious intolerance have no place in Westminster.\"
MAYOR PRAISES LOCAL EMERGENCY SERVICES
The Lord Mayor of Westminster, Cllr Tim Joiner, today praised the response of emergency services and the local community in Westminster. In a visit to Paddington Green Police Station and St Johns Wood Ambulance Centre, he commented:
“I was enormously impressed to see how swiftly and effectively the combined emergency and civic services were able to respond to the terrorist attack on the people of London yesterday. I am very clear that the disaster could have been far worse had it not been for a co-ordinated response of so many dedicated individuals. “
He also thanked Marks & Spencers who supplied free food and drinks and the London Hilton Metropole who turned their lobby into an emergency room for the injured.
