Demonstration in Central London Wednesday 9 November 2011 Information for Businesses A number of groups have announced that they are holding a National Student Demonstration on Wednesday 9 November 2011. Participants are expected to assemble from 12 noon on Malet Street to march to London Wall along the following route: Malet Street, Gower Street, Bloomsbury Street, Shaftesbury Avenue, Charing Cross Road Dungannon Street, The Strand, Fetter Lane, New Fetter Lane, Holborn Viaduct, Newgate Street, King Edward Street and London Wall. The march is scheduled to end at 6 pm. The Metropolitan Police Service and City of London Police are fully aware of the potential impact of any demonstrations on the local business community and are well equipped to deal with events like this. We have an appropriate and proportionate policing plan in place and are working closely with the organisers to ensure that the protest moves through London peacefully and that any disruption is kept to a minimum. You may notice an increase in the number of police officers in your area. This is part of the preparation for this event and should not be cause for alarm. Please contact your local Safer Neighbourhoods Team if you have any concerns. Whilst a robust policing plan is in place you can help to protect your business by taking a few sensible precautions. The following points are a list of considerations but are by no means exhaustive. 1. Retail premises should be suitably staffed with a prominent management presence. 2. Security officers, where possible, should have a visible presence at premises. 3. It would be advisable that a senior manager make himself/herself identifiable to police in the event of an incursion into your premises. 4. Ensure that your exit doors are properly secured and that you are able to lock and secure your front door if required to do so. 5. Consider minimising the number of entry points to your building as there is potential for your business premises to be used as access routes in the event of road closures. 6. If crime is committed in your premises consider the preservation of evidence where possible, for example CCTV. 7. Ensure that building perimeters are clear of dustbins, ladders or loose tools and equipment, which could be used to gain access or be used as weapons or to cause damage. Where possible, consider removing scaffolding from building premises and/ or ensure that security staff be made aware of the potential for unauthorised access. Where possible, remove completely or secure equipment such as ladders and ropes. 8. Check that your emergency equipment / grab bags / first aid supplies and radio communication systems are stocked and fully operational. 9. Ensure that all members of staff are fully aware of any emergency/evacuation procedures. 10. Ensure CCTV coverage is fully operational and can provide the highest recording resolution as possible. 11. During the day leading up to 9th of November, make sure that your staff are fully briefed, remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to security and/or police. 12. In the event of a situation that does not require an emergency police response, please call 101 (calls to 101 landlines and mobiles cost 15 pence per call, no matter what time of day you call or how long your call lasts). 13. In the event of an emergency, call the emergency number 999. Student protests expected in London on Wednesday 9 November 2011
The MPS has a responsibility to facilitate peaceful protest. However young people at school should continue their education on the day of the protest and go to school as usual. They should not try to travel in to central London or become involved in any protest during school hours.
Their unauthorised absence from school will make them subject to truancy laws and the police and education authorities may take appropriate action.
There will be a proportionate and strong presence of Police and Community Support Officers across London on the day of the protest, including at transport hubs and the areas surrounding schools. Officers will continue to provide the people of London a visible, accessible and familiar presence in their local communities in order to cut crime.

Representatives from student organisations have contacted police to notify their wishes to demonstrate within Central London on Wednesday 9th November 2011. This includes a march from Malet Street and a rally at a location yet to be agreed. Police are currently working with event organisers and further updates will be provided as planning progresses. Further updates will be sent out as and when appropriate. |

On the 30th June in central London there will be a large march and protest by public sector workers about planned pension cuts and this is being referred to in the media as J30. Four unions are supporting the event and these are NUT, PCS, UCU and ATL and direct action from some protestors cannot be ruled out.
This will be a very large event and the MET CO11 public order branch are putting a plan in place to Police the event. When I have more information on the event I will send it out via Community Safe.
In the run up to the day please report to Police any persons who you feel may be acting suspiciously as they may be looking at your premises to target on the day. Ensure that all CCTV is working and that all staff are briefed and aware.
For businesses that will remain open on the day please ensure you have a strict security plan and remain vigilant to persons who may try
to trick their way into your building.

On Saturday 14th May at approximately 11am, there will be a static demonstration taking in place in Old Palace Yard opposite the Houses Of Parliament. This event is organised by the Tax Payers Alliance. The group hope to attract 3000 people.There is no intelligence to suggest this group have any intention of moving away from parliament to cause disruption in the business districts of Westminster. However, extra policing resources have been put on duty to deal with any contingencies and to provide reassurance to local business that police will be on hand to deal swiftly and robustly with any disruption or disorder.
On Tuesday 17th May a group named "keep our NHS public" have planned a march and rally to highlight proposed changes to the NHS.The event is entitled "Kill Lansley's Bill". The group intend forming up outside UCH hospital at 530pm. The group hope to attract 2000 people many of whom will be NHS employees. At 645pm they intend to march to Whitehall via the following route, Gower Street, Bloomsbury Street, Shaftbury Ave, Charing Cross Road, Trafalgar Square and Whitehall. It is likely that London based activists will attend the march, however, as with similar recent marches for this cause, they will be small in numbers and as such are unlikely to engage in disorder / criminality without sufficient numbers or support. Again a significant policing operation has been put in place to not only police the march and rally but to deal with any issues in the wider buisness districts of Westminster. These extra police resources, deployed into the business districts, are to provide reassurance to local businesses that police will be on hand to deal swiftly and robustly with any disruption or disorder.
The MPS do not anticipate that either of these two events will cause significant disruption to the life of the business community here in Westminster and our message is very much "business as usual". If that picture changes, you will of course be updated with any further information or advice.
Tuesday 24th May sees the arrival of US President, Barrack Obama arriving in London for a 3 day state visit. This will a large security operation for the Metropolitan Police Service. When more details are available for this event next week, a further briefing will be sent.

The next Westminster Police Counter Terrorist Project Griffin wil be on the
9th May 2011. The event is designed to empower all public facing and security staff with the confidence to report all suspicious behaviour to Police.
The event consists of presentations delivered by key speakers within the Metropolitan Police counter terrorism command and the cost to attend is £30.00 per person this is to cover all costs.

The Royal Wedding Friday 29 April 2011 Information for Businesses.
On Friday 29th April 2011 HRH Prince William will marry Miss Catherine Middleton at Westminster Abbey. The ceremony will commence at 11.00 am and at 12.15pm the wedding procession will leave Westminster Abbey and will travel to Buckingham Palace along the following route:
Parliament Square, Whitehall, Horse Guards Arch, Horse Guards Road and The Mall.
Friday 29th April will be a public holiday and it is likely that large numbers of people will make their way into central London to take part in the celebrations. This may result in areas of the capital becoming congested and there will be road closures in and around Westminster from 06.00am or earlier.
Whilst the MPS will try to keep any disruption to a minimum, it is possible that on the day of the Royal Wedding you may need to make alternative arrangements for any collections or deliveries that you might normally receive.
The royal celebrations are also likely to attract large numbers of people in to central London who wish join in with the festivities.
Please ensure that you have sufficient staff or security to deal with the increased numbers of people expected to visit central London. Whilst this is a day of celebration criminals can use large crowds as a cover to commit crime so please ensure that your usual security measures are in place and that your staff are fully briefed on your security procedures and remain vigilant.
To summarise the key points on security are;
Have a strict security operation in place
Ensure regular external patrols either physical or CCTV
Monitor external CCTV constantly
Insist all staff entering show ID
Do not allow any unknown persons into foyer
Report all suspicious behaviour to Police immediately via 999
Report all suspicous gatherings of people to Police immediately.
There is no intelligence to suggest that disorder is is likely but we are not complacent and are continuing to investigate the potential for such criminal activity. As a precaution, there is a comprehensive policing plan to deal swiftly with any incidents we have not been able to prevent.

London has recently experienced a number of protests and demonstrations in relation to the proposed implementation of cuts to public spending by the government. These events have captured the hearts and minds of many and it is likely in the current economic climate that interest in this issue will continue for the foreseeable future.
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has announced that they are holding a march and rally entitled 'March for the Alternative' on Saturday 26 March 2011 in response to the government’s proposed austerity measures.
Participants will assemble from 11am between Temple Place and Blackfriars and will march to Hyde Park at midday along the following route: Embankment; Bridge Street; Whitehall; Trafalgar Square; Cockspur Street; Pall Mall; Waterloo Place; Lower Regent Street; Piccadilly; Park Lane; Hyde Park (entering Hyde Park corner).
A planned rally in Hyde Park will start at 1.30 pm and is scheduled to end at 4.30 pm.
Security officers and staff will need to be vigilant in and around their premises with strict security protocols in place for the duration of the event. Look out for suspicious persons and report any suspicious activity to Police.

'The No to Bike Tax group have stated that they will be demonstrating every Wednesday morning from 0800hrs. They will choose a location on the morning of the demo within an area and ride their motorbikes lawfully but in a way that causes maximum disruption.
They will not release the location until 0700hrs on the morning of te demonstration and their intention is to continue their protest until Westminster City Council stop charging Motorcycles to park.'
