Police have received 19 reports of garage and shed doors being levered or forced open between 25th March and 30th March in the following roads: Henley Avenue, Brocks Drive, St Margaret’s Avenue, Kingston Avenue, Kew Crescent, Walton Avenue and Gander Green Lane. Property such as bicycles, hand tools and electrical garden equipment have been stolen.
Police believe the suspects have gained access to the sheds or garages, located at the bottom of back gardens, via the rear access roads. Residents are being urged to report any suspicious behaviour to Police immediately on 999.
PC Pat Simcox of Sutton’s Crime prevention team suggests residents consider extending their existing burglar alarm on their home to include their garage and shed or installing a specific garage or shed alarm. On up-and-over garage doors, residents should consider fitting a heavy duty hasp and staple lock together with a padlock at each corner to add to the centre lock provided with the door; or a mortice lock for doors that engage into the side frame fitted close to the ground to prevent the corners of the door being lifted. For further information contact Sutton Police station’s crime prevention team on 020 8649 0569.
