Dear Member,
There has been a recent increase in Theft/Robbery of personal property ans items of jewellery on the ward. The suspects often target people who are distracted whilst using their mobile telephone or other expensive equipment in public. The suspects will approach and snatch the property from the victim and then make off. Please exercise extra vigilance and care whilst using your telephone or wearing headphones in public. Be aware of your surrondings and should you see anyone suspicious, immediately secure your property and move to a safe area, such as a cafe, shop or busy area. the following list, whilst not exhaustive will help you to stay safe:
1. Don't have valuables on show. If wearing expensive jewellery such as rings, consider wearing gloves. If it is not necessary to wear jewellery, consider the option of leaving it at home. 2. Before using your mobile telephone, consider your surroundings and look who is nearby to you or paying particular attention to the area where you are. If you do not feel safe or are uneasy about using it- don't! 3. If possible, do not walk alone. Consider setting up a buddy system at your place of work and pair up with a work colleague or friend, who can walk part or most of the way to your destination. Contact a friend or partner to let them know when you will be arriving and the route you are taking. Ask them to meet you if possible or to look out from a door or window for your arrival. 4. Vary the route you walk home or to your place of work. 5. Carry a torch. 6. Keep your wits about you. If you see a group of people who make you fell uneasy, try to walk in a different direction. 7. Stay in a well lit area of the street. Walk away from parked cars and close to the building line. This will afford you a space to escape should someone be hiding between parked cars and provide an opportunity to raise the alarm. 8. Try to stay in areas that are busy with pedestrian traffic. 9. If you are approached by any person that makes you feel uneasy, make as much noise as possible and try to draw attention to yourself. Do not be afraid to scream. If possible arm yourself with an audible panic alarm. 10. If driving, try to park in a well lit or busy area, so when you are returning to your vehicle it is not dark or isolated. Leave no sign of how long you will be away from your vehicle and do not leave valuables on show. 11. Ensure valuables are photographed, insured and serial numbers recorded. Without this information returning property to its rightful owner can prove difficult. 12. The most commonly stolen items are; I Phone, I Pad, other mobile telephones, visible jewellery and cash cards. 13. If you see someone/ something suspicious, when it is safe to do so telephone 101. If you witness an offence taking place or in an emergency dial 999.

Dear all,
I wanted to update you with the latest arrangements for this weekend's Notting Hill Carnival. Commander Steve Rodhouse, our spokesperson for this year's Carnival, gave a briefing to members of the press yesterday (Tuesday 23 August) outlining the policing operation for the Carnival and the rest of London during the bank holiday weekend and updating the press around our pre-event operation - Razorback - which is designed to target the small minority who we know want to ruin the event for the thousands who come to join in the spectacle of Carnival. In summary, his briefing outlined that Carnival this year will be taking place in unusual and exceptional circumstances and there is a detailed policing plan in place to manage this. Below is a copy of his briefing which I hope will give you a better understanding of our plans for the weekend and reassure you that we are working hard to ensure a peaceful weekend for all those involved. Regards, Penelope Banham Detective Superintendent Westminster BCU Crime Reduction & Partnership , certainly unprecedented in respect of the impact they had on London as a city, its people, police, and other emergency services. for weapons.

Dear Member,
Beware! CONMAN OPERATING IN THE WESTMINSTER AREA.
Please be aware of a leaflet which is being posted through letter boxes to residents and businesses in the local area from a company giving their name as BURLINGTON GALLERIES - of Brighton.
They state that they will value and purchase any antiques and they do not charge for valuations.
This is believed by police to be a cover for an opportune convicted thief that has practiced in the Westminster area previously praying on elderly victims - attempting to con his way into their homes and steal whatever he can.
Advice from you local team is to avoid this company or individual at all costs and do not believe any information received about them.
If you have already been a victim of this scam please contact the Warwick Team immediately and please rest assured all information is given confidentially.

Dear members
We have received information from residents that they have experienced a 'Telephone Scam' involving a call by what was described as a woman with a 'South African' accent.
The number called from is 0800 988 6006 and relates to a company calling themselves - EUROCHANCE 100
Research has been carried out by your local team via the internet and it appears to be a lottery scam.
If you receive a call from this company please hang up and DO NOT PASS ON ANY BANK DETAILS TO THEM!
This is part of the ongoing support you recieve from your local community team and please pass onto friends and relatives to raise their awareness.
Regards as always from the Warwick Team

Dear Member,
The Police are currently investigating a number of incidents that have occurred since 1st November 2010 where a fraudster has been targeting local residents trying to obtain money and steal items.
He attended the homes of elderly and vulnerable victims and told them specifically that he was collecting money for "sponsorship for his daughter who was either dying of or had Leukaemia, cancer, diphtheria.
Having entered the premises he has persuaded victims into giving him money. In a number of the incidents he has then distracted and confused the victims and stole money or property in addition to taking what the victims were giving him in good faith.
Most of the victims have been elderly, disabled and vulnerable ladies. The male has been arrested and we are currently appealing for witnesses to come forward so that we obtain further evidence or identify further offences not yet reported to police.
If you have any unexpected callers to your premises and if you are not sure or have any questions over their identity, Please call the Police Control Room(999) immediately.

Dear Member,
Bogus Police Officer W1 and WC2 Areas
In the last three days there have been two reports in relation to a bogus Police officer attempting to gain access to business premises in and around the W1 and WC2 areas.
The male has an A4 folder with him with various Metropolitan Police leaflets and in the first incident the mail attempted to gain access to premises by showing what appears to be fake documentation.
In the second incident the male was carrying a brown document case and stated that he was there to improve security, again his documentation could not be verified as he made off prior to arrival of Police units.
If you have any callers to your premises who claim to be Police officers please check their identification thoroughly and if you have any questions over their identity call the control room immediately (999). A genuine caller will not mind you checking their identity.

Dear Member,
The Neighbourhood Watch Scheme in the United Kingdom is a partnership where people come together to make their communities safer.
It involves the police, Community Safety departments of local authorities and above all individuals and families who want to make
their neighbourhood a better place to live. It aims to help people protect themselves and their properties and reduce the fear of crime
by means of improved home security, greater vigilance, accurate reporting of suspicious incidents to the police and by fostering a community spirit.
Neighbourhood watch schemes are run by their members through a Co-ordinator and are supported by the police and in many areas,
a local Neighbourhood Watch Association.
Neighbourhood Watch provides a way for local people to play an important part in addressing their local issues and making
their communities safer.
Some of the objectives and benefits of Neighbourhood Watch.
. To prevent crime by improving security, increasing vigilance, creating and maintaining a caring community and reducing opportunities
for crime by increasing crime prevention awareness.
. To assist the police in detecting crime by promoting effective communication and the prompt reporting of suspicious and criminal activity.
. To reduce undue fear of crime by providing accurate information about risks and by promoting a sense of security and community spirit,
particularly amongst the more vulnerable members of the community.
. To improve Police/ Community liaison by providing communications through effective tools which warn Co-ordinators of local crime trends
which they can disseminate to their scheme members, and by members informing the police when they occur.
. A 20% discount on your home insurance to all members when you have a Neighbourhood Watch set up/ up and running in your street .
If you are interested and for more details, please do not hesitate to contact PC Tony RYAN of the Warwick Ward Safer Neighbourhood Team on 0208 721 2420 or 0207 321 6759.

ALERT !!! BOGUS CALLER
Dear Member,
On Saturday 6th June 2010 a male bogus caller knocked on a local address on Warwick Ward late at night. The male pretended to be from the Council Noise team and he wanted the occupants to come out onto the street. This was thought suspicious and as a result police were called and it appears that this male had no connection with the council whatsoever. The callers intention is still unclear but may have been trying to trick his way into the premises.
Please always be alert to any unknown callers during night or day.
Always make sure that you know who you are dealing with and if in doubt always ask for Identification. If still in doubt call the police.
If you have any information please contact your local team on tel: 0208 721 2420

Dear Member,
There has been one incident of notice regarding a bag theft at The Queens Arms Public House, Warwick Way, SW1 this week. The stolen bag was apparently placed on the floor next to the victims chair, the suspect (no description) has then taken the bag un-noticed when getting up to leave the venue.
This is a typical theft in venues such as Restaurants, Public Houses and Café Bar’s during the summer months so please keep vigilant and report anyone you deem acting suspicious.
If you have any information on this or any other issue, please do not hesitate to contact us on 0208 721 2420.

Dear Member,
With the summer on the way, Warwick Safer Neighbourhood team have taken the initiative and launched its summer Anti-Street Drinking campaign.
Throughout the year Warwick SNT continuously confiscate Alcohol from Street Drinkers. However the summer months bring this problem to the fore, extra patrols are now in place in problematic areas and will remain so all summer.
As a result of the targeted patrols there has so far been one arrest for drink related offences by Sergeant SADLER. All those who have had their drink confiscated, their details have been added to a street drinkers data base which could be used to gain Anti Social Behaviour orders if their actions persist
So far there has been a marked declined in street drinking across the ward. We intend to remain vigilant and robustly tackle Anti-social behaviour in all its forms including alcohol related issues.

Dear Member,
Following on from COMMUNITY ALERT - January 13th 2010.
Warwick Ward Safer Neighbourhood Team are pleased to inform you of the successful operation listed below.
Warwick Ward Safer Neighbourhood Police Team update 01/05/2010.
The Abbots Manor Estate is the largest housing estate within the Warwick voting ward. A number of residents on the estate have been victim to a series of burglaries targeting vulnerable and elderly residents.
These burglaries were carried out by one individual who posed as an old friend or local care worker gaining the confidence of the victim to enter their flat and steal money and valuables.
The challenge faced by the Warwick ward safer neighbourhood team led by Sergeant Chris SADLER was to prevent any further burglaries and apprehend the suspect.
The Warwick SN team immediately held a police surgery on the estate and personally leafleted every address on the estate regarding crime prevention. Also those residents who had access to email received an immediate update on COMMUNITY SAFE website. Patrols were increased in and around this estate. At the same time dedicated officers from Warwick SNT attempted to identify this individual. After canvassing door to door, a suspect description emerged this information was shared with one of our many partners the landlord City West Homes. The Police team working with their partner viewed hours of CCTV footage on the estate. This resulted in the suspect being identified on film. The police investigation then entered a new stage to identify the individual’s identity.
Due to the diligence of the investigating police officers the individual’s identity was established.
The individual was arrested at her home address and she was charged with 1 count of Burglary, 1 Count of attempted Burglary and 1 count of theft. She was not granted bail and will appear at CITY OF WESTMINSTER MAGISTRATES COURT in MAY 2010.
The professionalism which the Warwick Safer Neighbourhood team expedited resulted in a successful arrest.
Regards,
Warwick Ward SNT

Dear Member,
Please read this important message.
By understanding how the VISA & MasterCard Telephone Credit Card Scam works, you'll be better prepared to protect yourself.
A mastercard employee was called on Wednesday from "VISA", and then he was called on Thursday from "MasterCard".
The scam works like this: Person calling says, "This is (name), and I'm calling from the Security and Fraud Department at VISA. My badge number is 12460. Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I'm calling to verify. This would be on your VISA card which was issued by (name of bank) did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for £497.99 from a Marketing company based in London ?" When you say "No", the caller continues with, "Then we will be issuing a credit to your account. This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from £297 to £497, just under the £500 purchase pattern that flags most cards.
Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives you your address), is that correct? "You say "yes". The caller continues - "I will be starting a fraud investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 0800 number listed on the back of your card (0800-VISA) and ask for Security. You will need to refer to this Control Number. The caller then gives you a 6 digit number. "Do you need me to read it again?"
Here's the IMPORTANT part on how the scam works the caller then says, "I need to verify you are in possession of your card." He'll ask you to "turn your card over and look for some numbers." There are 7 numbers; the first 4 are part of your card number, the next 3 are the security numbers that verify you are the possessor of the card.
These are the numbers you sometimes use to make Internet
purchases to prove you have the card. The caller will ask you to
read the 3 numbers to him. After you tell the caller the 3 numbers, he'll say, "That is correct, I just needed to verify that the card has not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card. Do you have any other questions?" After you say, "No," the caller then thanks you and states, "Don't hesitate to call back if you do", and hangs up. You actually say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the Card number .
But after we were called on Wednesday, we called back within 20
minutes to ask a question. Are we glad we did! The REAL VISA
Security Department told us it was a scam and in the last 15 minutes a new purchase of £497.99 was charged to our card.
we made a real fraud report and closed the VISA account.
VISA is reissuing us a new number.
What the scammers want is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of the card. DON’T GIVE IT TO THEM.
Instead, tell them you'll call VISA or MasterCard directly for
verification of their conversation. The real VISA told us that they will never ask for anything on the card as they already know the information since they issued the card! If you give the scammers your 3 Digit PIN Number, you think you're receiving a credit.
However, by the time you get your statement you'll see charges for purchases you didn't make, and by then it's almost too late and/or more difficult to actually file a fraud report.
REMEMBER NEVER GIVE YOUR PERSONAL OR FINANCIAL DETAILS OVER THE PHONE UNLESS YOU KNOW THE PEOPLE YOU ARE TALKING TO ARE WHO THEY SAY THEY ARE.
Thanks
Warwick SNT
