SNT and BTP rail station operation reassures the public
On 23 June Streatham Safer Neighbourhood Teams (Streatham South, Streatham Hill and St Leonards) and British Transport Police conducted a joint operation with Revenue Officers from Southern Railway at Streatham Common and Streatham Hill Rail Stations where two people were arrested.
The operation involved using a knife arch and a passive drugs dog - following incidents of robberies on passengers in recent months, information of drugs use and touting at the stations.
A juvenile was arrested at Streatham Hill Rail Station for possession of cannabis who was later reprimanded.
A 28 year-old polish man living in Battersea was arrested at Streatham Common Rail Station and later cautioned for possession of herbal cannabis and amphetamines while two further people were warned for possession of cannabis.
In total 23 people were searched for drugs, 14 of which admitted having smoked cannabis in the days prior to being stopped or had been around drug use.
Nine further people were stopped and spoken to regarding their behaviour and 15 people were fined for ticket offences while another three passengers were reported to Court for fare evasion.
A cyclist received a £30 fine for riding on the pavement near to Streatham Hill Rail Station. While two passengers in a passing car received £60 fines for not wearing their seat belts.
Acting PS Jeffrey said: "The majority of the public commented they felt reassured by our presence. We continue to run these operations to drive down crime and show people we are prepared to challenge their behaviour to make the public feel safe."
