On 2nd June between the hours of 11:30 - 2:30 pm hours an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) operation took place on Streatham High Rd opposite the Texaco petrol station.
The joint initiative with the Council and Streatham South Safer Neighbourhoods Team targeted vans and lorries to ensure they had waste licences and any other motorists suspected of motoring offences.
Approximately 50 Stops in total were made, one fine for £300 for carrying substantial waste with no licence. One pedestrian was fined £80 for littering. One stolen vehicle was recovered and a man was arrested on suspicion of driving without consent from the owner. And finally two vehicles were searched for drugs.
PS Mark Brindley of Streatham South Safer Neighbourhoods Team said; "The local Community have long complained that ANPR Operations always run further up Streatham High Road, away from the ward. The public attending our meetings felt many dubious characters used the Ward as a ‘cut through’ to avoid Police Traffic Operations.
The SNT and local response teams have listened to the public and we intend to do much more ad-hoc operations with ANPR and speed guns in the Streatham South Ward to catch criminals using the wards roads to travel on. These joint operations with the Council also deter potential fly tippers from the ward, which is required due to the spate of fly tipping in the ward. I intend to do many more joint operations with the Street Care team. It is important that drivers of Vans and Lorries that carry waste have the necessary waste licences on them if stopped by Police."
